Wow !

Its amazing how Pennant has had a couple of decent halfs (he hasnt and never looks like producing over 90 min) in the last month or so. And now he's regarded as one of our better performers, and sure people round he sing a different tune every other month, me included . :D

Pennant and Gonzalez are ?

Yes they are. Gonzalez is young and can do much better than that, in the last game against Arsenal he did a decent game. Better game than the early season matches he played. Still far of what he can provide.

That's my opinion as a football fan anyway. I might be wrong.

*shrug*

I hope not, but I'm pretty sure you are.

Well since we are calling it. Riise infuriates the hell out of me. Yes he's scored some vital goals. Yes he is an attacking threat. And Yes i absolutely am made up for the lad after all the cr@p in his off the field business blah blah. But as a defender?  Meh.- Weak link end of.

(Of course i meant Riise going with a replacement inplace stu). Who exactly? well, how about Bridge or failing that, use the 3-5-2 with Alves/Riise/Aurelio (when fit) as flanks? Id be OK with Riise out there.

As for Klose, who heads the ball better?  Dont tell me Crouch! (btw - been working on the power/direction/neck muscles - and to good effect) good for Crouchy.

But, we need 'different' types of strikers/Forwards. And if Klose is one of them that is available - i say, why not?  Forget Eto'o forget Villa. They arent coming.

In any case why are we all assuming Rafa fancies having a go with silly money at ChampManager with the investment funds..Im fully expecting two maybe three serious additions at the most. The rest, as you quite rightly say is largely competent enough.

Rip away  :D

I was actually waiting for back up Red against the other two, Sabre and Stu :D

But you've dissapointed, and now I've gotta ask.

We've had one or two of the best defensive league records for a few years now, how can it be that Riise has been "carried" for such a time ?

If we posed an equal threat on both wings, opposition teams would find it harder to afford to double-mark Pennant.  Similarly, our CMs and strikers are often playing too deep / wide, which also leaves Pennant isolated.  Add to that, we are short of consitent goal threats elsewhere, and our midfield has been off-colour for far too many games.  Pennant has suffered from the rest of the team being unbalanced and / or not giving him "perfect" support at all times.

One of the problems he faces is that Rafa does not often play two outright wingers, more so one winger and one wide other-flank player.  And sometimes not even that.  So sometimes Rafa's tactics dictate that Pennant will start on the bench, and sometimes not even there.  Squad rotation has also meant he doesn't get a long run of games in the side. Add to that, that Pennant does seem to be a confidence player.

All that being said, though, I still feel he's good but not great, at least in a consistent, match winning mould. He may improve, or he may have to be replaced / supplanted with a better out-and-out winger.

Who knows? That's why Rafa gets paid so much money.  :D

Dudek - Has to leave, he has sat on the bench with a big fat contract for the last 2 years now. He is never ever going to win his place back because Reina is better in all areas as a keeper. The Spanish connection cements this.

Fowler - Not being played and personally don't think he can force his way in. He has scored goals when he has played and he is actually our best striker in goals for games ratio. I ts a sad end to a brilliant career.

Pennant - I am undecided on this lad. I never thought he would make the grade and am disapointed to say he is proving me right. The one thing I do like when he plays is the natural width he gives us. He stretches the game out a lot wider when he plays and leaves the middle open for Gerrard. However I am pretty sure there our 10 or 11 right wingers in the Premiership who could do the same. If I was Rafa - he'd be out the door.

Gonzo - Give him one more season, but I think Rafa really rates him so expect a prolonged run in the 1st team next year.

Zenden - Never going to get a game now with the quality at CM. Will leave in the summer.

Kewell - I am a fan of Harry's and have defended him on here a few times but I can see him leaving in the summer. He will only have 1 year left on his contract and to be honest I think because of his injuries etc he will not be offered a similar termed deal (£60,000 +) so expect him to be shipped off to Spurs or Newcastle.

The striker situation baffles me. Fowler is a gonna for sure, but with Voronin coming in that will leave us with the 4 strikers again and surely a natural goal getter is high on the agenda? Will Crouch go for big money (£12m+), or will Bellamy be shown the door? Personally I cannot see Kuyt being sold as Rafa likes the guy but I don't think we will start next season with 5 strikers. Maybe Rafa won't spend big on a striker? He doesn't like being told what to do and maybe he thinks the current crop can justifly themselves? I don't know but its going to be an interesting summer, for sure.

Because he has been supplemented by an outstanding central defence. And covered for by an equally adept midfield. How many balls for instance has Momo tracked back to retrieve, due to Riise's indiscipline...or Carra had to 'deal' with at the last moment?

His errors in Defence are numerous.

His ability to support the attack, making a High proportion of second balls into strikes on goal, however, is where his best asset lies.  Far from it am i saying the fella is disposable (in light of FA's injury) But there are more weaknesses in his game than positives. And that will prove costly, eventually over the course of a campaign. He aint the only one...but he is ONE of them i consider to be on the hitlist (at some point in the not too distant - regardless).

In a 3-5-2?  he could well be best used. That is a consideration, given the flexibility the gaffer likes to make use of.

Okay for the Pennant admirers out there a hypothetical qusetion.

If you were Rafa and had a warchest to spend in the summer would you :

a) Take a gamble in the transfer market and buy a right mid of your choice ?

or

b) Keep the money spend it elsewhere and start with Pennant as RM next season ?

(Dont worry about the midfield and the fact Gerrard can play RM if Mascha and Xabi play central just answer the question :D)

P.s there is no  c.

a combination of  a) and the scenario youve identified (topically) in parenthesis.

Oh and the retention of Pennant as cover. There, all bases covered.   :D

(provided point a) is given due diligence, i see no probs with RM next term.
