i know that it may appear like old ground, but the events of the last 48 hours have really brought home to me what could have happened to our football club in the worst case scenario.
for once, i have to salute the board for making a bold, and CORRECT decision for sacking gerard houllier when they did. ok certain members of this forum were campaigning for houllier to be given one more season. to them i say this. if houllier had remained in charge, what state would the club be in now?
i'd say stevie g would have left for cheslea. he even admitted that the new manager was a major influence in his decision to stay. certain papers have been a disgrace in suggesting that he only stayed because his family received death threats. benitez deserves a chance and stevie g has given himself to the club for the forseeable future anyway. Michael Owen might have left after seeing Stevie G leaving, and consequently we would not have got enough money for him. now, it appears that he will sign a 2 year extension, which is another great boost for all fans. these two players are liverpools two most valuable assets, and having them both on board reaffirms that we are not suddenly becoming a "selling club".
milan baros would also have handed in a transfer request. after seeing the guy in euro 2004 that would have been a major blow for liverpool. baros hit out at houllier about his lack of first team opportunities and would have most likely have left for a ridiculously cheap fee. hopefully, benitez will see the talent the guy has and give him more opportunities in the forthcoming season. to me, the fact that he was playing second fiddle to heskey (yes him again) for most of last season really proves houllier's managerial inadequacies during his last two seasons at the club.
Well done Parry and co for making the right decision. things are looking up. any type of investment now would put the icing on the cake. by no means am i saying that we are going to become championship winners overnight, but things are certainly looking better than they could have done.
agree?
