If houllier had stayed. - We'd be in the sh#t now

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Tue Jun 29, 2004 12:47 pm

i know that it may appear like old ground, but the events of the last 48 hours have really brought home to me what could have happened to our football club in the worst case scenario.

for once, i have to salute the board for making a bold, and CORRECT decision for sacking gerard houllier when they did. ok certain members of this forum were campaigning for houllier to be given one more season. to them i say this. if houllier had remained in charge, what state would the club be in now?

i'd say stevie g would have left for cheslea. he even admitted that the new manager was a major influence in his decision to stay. certain papers have been a disgrace in suggesting that he only stayed because his family received death threats. benitez deserves a chance and stevie g has given himself to the club for the forseeable future anyway. Michael Owen might have left after seeing Stevie G leaving, and consequently we would not have got enough money for him. now, it appears that he will sign a 2 year extension, which is another great boost for all fans. these two players are liverpools two most valuable assets, and having them both on board reaffirms that we are not suddenly becoming a "selling club".

milan baros would also have handed in a transfer request. after seeing the guy in euro 2004 that would have been a major blow for liverpool. baros hit out at houllier about his lack of first team opportunities and would have most likely have left for a ridiculously cheap fee. hopefully, benitez will see the talent the guy has and give him more opportunities in the forthcoming season. to me, the fact that he was playing second fiddle to heskey (yes him again) for most of last season really proves houllier's managerial inadequacies during his last two seasons at the club.

Well done Parry and co for making the right decision. things are looking up. any type of investment now would put the icing on the cake. by no means am i saying that we are going to become championship winners overnight, but things are certainly looking better than they could have done.

agree?

I was mixed about it to be honest but it looks like the revelations and true feelings will come out now and it looks more and more like Houllier going when he did was a good move for the club.

I still think he did some good things and vastly improved the training facilities but I think people are a lot more confident with Benitez in charge.

I wonder now who will be the next player to come out and talk.

agree, Benitez carries a great reputation, and you have to credit Parry and co for getting their man.

I am extremely optimistic about next season, Gerrard staying, Owen probs staying, Cisse arrival and being linked with players like Ballack, Aimar etc, thinks are looking up for next season!

with no propsed investment going through i am interested to see how much money we have to spend on players. i hear that the value is approximately 30m, half of which is going on one player. it's not as if we have an endless pit of money like chelsea to bring in all these players we're linked with.

put it this way, i think all supporters have genuwine optimism for next season, if houllier had stayed in charge the season would start with fans unhappy and depressed and i reckon it just would have been a repeat of last season, good ridance i say

Well, as you've been hearing more and more from the players. You can sense that they are glad to see houllier gone as well.

It makes me wonder what the players really think.  While GH was here they were all coming out and publicly backing him, no as soon as he's gone they're saying they were about to up and leave.

Have to agree. Houllier staying for even one more year could have caused serious long-term damage. One more mediocre year would have seen any new manager having little to spend, having to deal with the probable loss of Owen and Gerrard and most probably left with the dead wood to work with. Now tho things are looking bright with a proven top class manager at the helm, the key players committing their futures to the club and finally quality players being linked(the sort of players LFC should be competing for) things are looking up!
A seriously positive move by the board - well done.

Apperently those who backed GH for one more season were those who had no idea about the replacement yet. Once being insured it's gonna be Rafa, I didn't hear any complaint demanding GH to stay.

It just confirms how predictable the British media really are ,it’s a miracle hub caps and shell suits weren’t mentioned .
All those Fleet St hacks must be crying into their extortionately over priced Lager  and cockles,
They were deprived of their sensational headlines by the simple fact Chelsea may be the darlings of the Cockney press but in Stevens eyes never big enough to replace his true  vocation the love of our club.

Never mind maybe Chelsea can obtain the services of that Internationally acclaimed midfield Dynamo
Owen Hargreaves  ha ha !
