Long shots

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Dundalk » Sun Feb 11, 2007 1:08 am

Why all the long shots?

Ive noticed it in the last few matches that we have played that we seem to be hitting shots from way outside the box when we could play it simple.

Riise, Agger and Gerrard but to name a few are letting fly from 30 or 40 yards when there is a better ball on. Pass the ball!!

Yes every one out of fifty will fly into the top corner but it is rare and the chance is wasted.

I thinks its is born out of frustration, it looks like a case of "nothing seems to be working might aswell have a pop". I agree it is rare for one to fly in but i would rather the three players mentioned plus Alonso be the ones trying them if anyone

Because we cant score one on one with just the goalie?
Baros, Cisse, Crouch, Kuyt? how many time have they been one on one and messed it up?
Go for the long ones, we'll have more of a chance of scoring !

Nonsense...when they do fly in, they're the best goals ever! You play the percentages, when the opportunity arises i dont blame them for having a pop.  Sure, seven out of ten will end up in row M. Two out of ten will finish up parried out the way or blocked...but every now and again there will be one, just one screamer that finds the target like a laser guided missile, making the argument defunct and providing the will to live amongst other virtues...not least much discussion over an ale or three.  Besides the companies that invest millions in advancing the technology that directly affects the trajectory and velocity of the modern football would be out of business if there werent endless cases of the damn things switching violently in flight (which i presume is the intention?) and ending up looking 'sweet' on the telly!  It all adds to the excitement for me....as much as i love to see the likes of Cambiasso's finish via an exquisite 'team' goal for Argentina last summer (which btw i would rate as the greatest ever goal i have personally witnessed) You just cannot beat the satisfaction in seeing a Gerrard scorcher 2 minutes from the end of an FA Cup final...an Alonso 'bomb' from god knows how far out...a Riise rocket...a garcia special!  etc..all great stuff.

Of course, and in all seriousness the point is WHEN to attempt them. In light of that i fully sympathise with the intentions of the thread....But come on, who remembers the tap-ins!

Great post red.  Last year I noticed (or thought I did) that with Stevie playing on the right he didn't score AS MANY rockets as in previous years - FA cup final notwithstanding.  He got loads more goals, but a lot were from bursting into the box and slotting home, or occationally a rebound.  I'd watch the season review again, but my DVD player is f*cked - maybe somebody who's seen it recently can confirm?  Anyway, my (rather long winded) point is that although players who CAN score these rockets (SG, Xabi, Riise) do score a few belters each year, when they are in a different position  (most of SG's rockets were central) and they end up shooting from closer in they get the rewards amplified.  Just to contradict my post again, Stevie's goal against Middlesborough right before the end of the 2005times season is probably the best goal I've ever personally witnessed - but he scored it from out wide on the right...

No, that celebration was the Portsmouth free kick that got set up for him.  After this goal I think sprints towards the Main stand - looking f*cking ectastic.  The commentary kind of ruins it though.  "Those are the moments... that Liverpool supporters will remember.... If Steven Gerrard does leave Liverpool, he'll remember that one for the rest of his life."  Ian Gwin Hughes is a gobsh*te.

Luckily for me I saw that one from 203...

The table of teams do remember those, with matches won, and getting 3 points. That's what the people really remembers afterwards.

I think we shoot to much from range. It's a temptation since last season we made a lot of goals that way, but at the end of the day it might mean less service for the strikers. I think the long shot is a good option when the oposition is deep, we have the men to shoot from range (Agger, Riise, Alonso, Gerrard) but not always. Perhaps we should try this a lil bit less.

I think the new ball is tempting players to have a go . Never seen a season like this before with so many spectacular long range efforts catching the keeper out . I'm all for it .

I think we definately try long shots far too often, yes we have the players to trouble the keeper and like woof said these new balls move so much.
But A) its predicatable and teams are dropping deeper because of it.
B) It may look good when one goes in, but when they dont it frustrates everyone and smacks of desperation.

The only defence i have for the players is the lack of quality on the wings, more often than not the ball is wasted by the wide players anyway.
BUT if we had better wide players i would expect the amount of efforts from range to drop...and by alot.

Hey long range shots have saved us countless times in the past. And not just us either many teams. Would we have beaten West Ham had Kuyt not hit that screamer at the start of the 2nd half? Possibly but you never know.

I've got nothing against them.
