The article was posted 5 minutes before the deadline. I believe everything has been done in order for him to become a Liverpool player. I believe it hasn't been officially confirmed because of all the paper work that surrounds this bizarre transfer still needs to be sorted out. However, it was all processed before the deadline thus making it legitimate.

And as i typed this

LFC ONLINE

With only 17 minutes of the transfer window remaining Liverpool finally completed the longwinded signing of Javier Mascherano from West Ham.

After having to wait for special dispensation from FIFA and then for the FA to confirm the tranafer could go through, the Reds had to move quickly to get their man.

"After these months when I've hardly had the chance to play, to sign for a team like Liverpool is very important for my career and my life," said the Argeninian midfielder. "The whole world knows about the history of Liverpool.

"It is especially important that someone of Rafa's calibre has belief in me. This opportunity is there for me. I have to show the manager that his expectation is justified."

We believe he has signed an 18-month loan deal, but await official confirmation

And finally

From PremierLeague.com

PREMIER LEAGUE RECEIVE MASCHERANO FORMS

The Premier League have confirmed they have received West Ham United midfielder Javier Mascherano's registration documents from Liverpool prior to the closure of the transfer window.
However, the Premier League Board have decided to "take time to satisfy itself with the proposed arrangements before the registration can be effected and the player permitted to play for Liverpool FC."

The Argentina midfielder was given special dispensation by world governing body FIFA to complete the transfer as he had already played for two clubs competitively this season - the Hammers and Brazilian club Corinthians.

IF its confirmed.

I just wonder, with the amount of quality in midfield will Rafa primarily adopt a 3-5-2 formation ?

Well he has been going that way recently for away games but I see it as part of his rotation policy with four great midfielders. However, with the signing of Mascherano and Sissoko coming back I see Gerrard restricted to the right once again. While I love Sissoko as a player, I believe Gerrard is key as a central midfielder.

Liverpool made to wait over Mascherano deal

Liverpool's protracted bid to sign West Ham midfielder Javier Mascherano has been drawn out further by the Premier League's decision to look more closely at the details of the transfer.

The Argentina midfielder was yesterday given special dispensation by world governing body FIFA to complete the transfer as he had already played for two clubs competitively this season - the Hammers and Brazilian club Corinthians.

Liverpool submitted the player's registration documents to the Premier League ahead of the midnight transfer deadline but they cannot, as yet, call the player their own.

'The Premier League can confirm that, in accordance with its rules, Javier Mascherano's registration documents were received from Liverpool FC prior to the transfer window closing,' said a statement from the Premier League.

'While Liverpool have met the required deadline the Premier League Board, consistent with its powers in this matter, has decided to take time to satisfy itself with the proposed arrangements before the registration can be effected and the player permitted to play for Liverpool FC.

'The board will consider the terms of the registration as quickly as possible and notify the parties involved of its decision accordingly.'

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool were the most significant players on deadline day for the January transfer window with Rafael Benitez scoring a hat-trick of new signings.

Deportivo La Coruna defender Alvaro Arbeloa, 24, and promising Malaga youngster Francisco Manuel Duran, 18, both wrapped up moves to Anfield within hours of the window closing at midnight on Tuesday.

Liverpool also secured the registration of Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano after FIFA ruled that he could sign for his third club in less than a year.

Mascherano joined West Ham from Brazilian side Corinthians on the last deadline day at the end of August.

The World Cup star's ability to play for Liverpool however remains subject to final approval from the English Premier League, who have asked for more time to examine the deal.

Arbeloa, who cost Liverpool 2.6 million pounds, admitted the move had taken him by surprise.

"Until yesterday I wasn't sure whether I was going to leave or not," he said. "My agent told me the deal was very advanced and I was then told that the deal had been reached between both clubs.

"For me this is a beautiful challenge and I hope everything goes well. It's a huge leap for me."

Duran only made his first team debut for Malaga earlier this season and has secured a first professional contract with his move to Merseyside.

"It's a unique opportunity and I couldn't let it go by," the teenager said. "I have spoken with Rafa Benitez, and I believe that this is the best option for me.

Good news about Mascherano.
I just got up and check the official site and my heart sunk when I saw no announcement. I envisaged Zenden's return to midfield as we try and push for the title.
Hopefully the Premier League will rubber stamp the deal today and allay my fears.

I find it hard to believe the English F.A. can over-rule FIFA...... Thats just not feasible surely? No, wait, this is the same F.A. that replaced the muppet Erickson with the guy pullin his strings, so I guess jus about anythins possible!! :p
Stu Averill, a wannabe Scouse/Scot. I remember the good times & have faith in them comin back

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road

This came out in the www.liverpoolfc.tv website. Quoting Rafa on Mascherano:

"In the World Cup he played really well. Some people say we don’t need any more midfielders, but we only have Xabi Alonso who is a holding midfielder."

What is Sissoko's position then?
