Sabre , is it true that sometimes in spanish a letter V is pronounced as a B ? I went into a bar in Torres del Mar , the sign was "Viva Bar" but I was told it's pronounced "Biba" bar .

Is that right ? whats the rule ? surely Valencia is not pronounced Balencia ?

I can answer that one woof. This is my chance to share a bit of what I've learnt doing GCSE Spanish

Yes it is true.

take for example the number 20. It is spelt veinte. But to you and me it is pronounced 'beyntey'

This rule of pronouncing a v as a b is very common. But there are some exceptions where a softer v is used which sounds 'vey'

can't say I know what beaver is in spanish

so yes, valencia is 'balencia'.

I'm sure Sabre will correct me if I'm wrong

Adam: A+ In Spanish today

I have some problems with that, as you point out Beaver is a tricky word for me. So is beach, and bitch, which caused me a misunderstanding in Ireland a lot of years ago (I know saying it correctly now).

THe b and v are pronounced the same way always, and it's the main source of mistakes in written Spanish. The best trick when you doubt is to remember patterns, Adam, because most words starting by "vi" are with v. Vino, Vida, Vista, Vicisitud, Vil, Viento but it's not a general rule because there are words like bicho. At the end of the day, the more you read, the more you write them correctly. H is a word you have to ignore at all in Spanish, Harina would be the same as Arina, pronounced.

although to be honest, sabre - the v pronunciation is spain is a softer sound than the english b, right? its like a b that slides warmly and suggestively through the lips rather than one that butts up against the inside of the mouth like a horny goat.

Friday? nice. I'll pass it. Thanks for the link, I hate learning english in school or official places, because the english that you learn there, it's useless if you go to england on hollidays and talk to people in street. I like to learn what it's actually used (aswell)
