GERRARD KEEN FOR CARLING CUP GLORY
Paul Eaton 09 January 2007

Steven Gerrard is desperate to be given a place in Liverpool's starting line-up tonight and help the Reds make amends for Saturday's FA Cup defeat.

The Liverpool skipper admits there was a sense of disappointment in the dressing room after Arsenal's 3-1 win at the weekend, but this evening's Carling Cup clash at least gives Rafael Benitez's men a chance to exact instant revenge.

Benitez has already hinted he will be selecting a stronger side than normal in this competition, and Gerrard admits he would love the chance to have another go against the Gunners.

"We're all desperate to have another go at them. As a player, whenever you lose a big game you just want to get back out there straight away," added Gerrard. "But I do think there will be a different starting eleven and 16-man squad.

"Unfortunately, we won't have as many fixtures as we'd like now and there will be a few free weekends, and maybe that will come into the equation.

"That's why we always say we'd rather have a hectic fixture schedule, because it means we'd still be in every competition.

"The manager will also be thinking about the important Premiership games to come though.

"If we can win our next two league games, we know the league will be very interesting for us again.

"I can understand both viewpoints, but we really want to win a trophy and get back to Cardiff, especially for the fans."

He added: "It was a funny feeling after the game, because although we all felt disappointed, there are times when we've lost these types of match and I've felt a lot worse.

"Someone said if you're going to lose in the FA Cup, the best one to lose is the game after you've won it, and there might be something in that. I still feel last May is fresh in the memory.

"Don't get me wrong though. We were all gutted not to be in the draw, and maybe it will sink in more when the next rounds are being played.

"There have been times when we've played Arsenal when I've come off the pitch feeling we'd been outplayed or outclassed, but that wasn't the case this time.

"For 25 minutes we thought we were the only team that looked like scoring, but we've been punished badly for our mistakes.

"When you play a side with their quality, the first goal is always going to be crucial.

"We've let them get into good positions without putting in a challenge and they've hurt us.

"That gave us a massive mountain to climb, but even then I thought the lads responded well in the second half.

"When we got back to 2-1 we had a real chance because the momentum was with us, but everyone knows what they can do on the break.

"You can talk about our mistakes, but sometimes you also just have to say you're always going to find it difficult at times when you're playing against a team which, in my opinion, has the best player in the world in Thierry Henry.

"When you're talking about any difference between us, he might be it."

Henry had words of praise for the Liverpool supporters after Saturday's game and Gerrard is hoping the fans can generate a similar atmosphere inside Anfield tonight.

"Thierry came up to me at the end of the game and said the fans here are fantastic," he said.

"I talk to him all the time and he's always telling me how much respect he has for the club and supporters.

"I know our fans have as much respect for him. It was the best atmosphere for a long time on Saturday, especially this season, and I know it was a special occasion.

"After the six minutes the noise level was unbelievable. All the players thought it was fantastic, and I hope the noise level is the same tonight because it definitely makes a difference."

Come on reds! You can ALL make the difference!  :buttrock

Liverpool - Dudek, Warnock, Peltier, Hyypia, Paletta, Gerrard, Guthrie, Gonzalez, Aurelio, Fowler, Bellamy. Subs - Reina, Garcia, Alonso, Carragher, Crouch.

Bit dodgy playing Peltier, Warnock and Palette for this one I know they need games but this could be our only hope of silverware this season.
