LIVERPOOL VS ARSENAL - FA CUP DEFENCE OVER!!!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby red37 » Wed Jan 03, 2007 1:24 pm

First of a 3 day double header with these, due to last months cancellation because of the fog, the CC tie will follow hot on the heels of this one.  Can we expect TWO successive victories over the Gooners...in such a short space of time?  Its certainly possible; They'll have their talisman back so it sure aint going to be a piece of cake, but for me they are inconsistant and not exactly setting the world alight so far...no better time to play them then!  Anyway, I'll keep the intro short as the Skipper would like a word....

GERRARD DREAMING OF MORE CUP GLORY
Paul Eaton 03 January 2007

Steven Gerrard has a twin FA Cup aim this season: to help the Reds defend the trophy for the first time in their history and to become the first Liverpool captain to lift the famous trophy twice.
Liverpool kick off their defence of the Cup they won so memorably in Cardiff last season when they entertain Arsenal this weekend in what is undoubtedly the tie of the third round.

Gerrard admits the draw could have been kinder to the Reds, but he believes Arsenal have more to worry about ahead of kick-off than Rafael Benitez's in-form side.

He said: "The draw could have been kinder but the important thing is we are at home. They will be fearing the tie more than we will.

"They're a top side with top players and we know it's going to be a very difficult game but we've proved we can beat anybody at Anfield and I'm sure it's going to be a terrific match this weekend. We're certainly all looking forward to it.

"We've got a really strong squad, we're playing well at the moment and I fancy us to be in the draw for the fourth round."

Ron Yeats (1965), Emlyn Hughes (1974), Alan Hansen (1986), Ronnie Whelan (1989) and Mark Wright (1992) have all skippered the Reds to FA Cup glory while 2001 captain Sami Hyypia was joined by Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Fowler in lifting the trophy after our victory over Arsenal in Cardiff.

Gerrard inspired the Reds to Cup glory over West Ham last year and has now revealed his determination to make history and be the first captain to lift the trophy at the new Wembley Stadium.

"I know Liverpool have never won the FA Cup two years in a row but this team likes breaking records and rewriting history and this is another statistic we want to put right," he added.

"We all remember how we won the competition last season and we're keen to do it again. I'd love nothing better than to lift the trophy again at the new Wembley at the end of the season."

:buttrock  too right!!  Come on you Reds!

Pennant   Gerrard    Alonso   Gonzales

      Bellamy/Kuyt     Fowler/Crouch

Got a ticket for this one (although it's pretty much pitch level!) so i can't wait. Got to be confident and fancy us to win it 1-0 or 2-1.

Bit of a 'where do you place this post...."  But nice all the same, to hear some positivity from the lad considering his recent upturn of form. Never doubted he has the talent...its evidently a case of 'stagefright' for me that JP has taken this long to find his feet..Anyway - whats this got to do with the thread?  well hopefully this time round, Pennant will be in a far better frame of mind to stick one over on Wenger and his ex employees..with Interest!  Lets see how the next week unfolds though before shouting his name from the rooftops..In any case its great to see a bit of confidence return in both his latest outings and his upbeat comments as a result.

PENNANT BOOSTED BY NEW YEAR'S DAY DISPLAY
Paul Eaton 03 January 2007

Jermaine Pennant is hoping to build on his impressive start to 2007 and convince his doubters he has what it takes to be a success at Anfield.
Pennant was the star of the show on Monday as Liverpool kicked off the new year in style with a convincing 3-0 victory over Bolton to move into third place in the Premiership table.

The winger's performance was enough to draw plaudits from skipper Steven Gerrard at the end of the match and Pennant is hoping that display is a sign of better things to come from him in the red shirt.

"It was good to have the confidence booster of a performance like that against Bolton," said Pennant.

"Maybe it was one of my best performances since joining Liverpool. It's good to get a game like that under my belt.

"I feel I'm winning more of the fans over now with performances like that. I think when I arrived everyone hoped I would kick straight into action, but sometimes it takes time to get used to playing in front of the crowd and the different players. Now I feel things are coming along better.

"It's a new year and I hope I'm now going to continue with those kinds of performance.

"Things have gone quite well for the team lately, particularly in moving to third. We know some performances could have been better. That includes myself as much as other players, but we've all stuck in there and been grinding results out. If we continue to play as we are, I'm sure we'll stick around the top three.

"We look back at that Blackburn game now and know if we'd won that we would be right on the heels of Chelsea. That's frustrating because we were all over Blackburn on that day and had enough attempts on goal.

"After that it was all about keeping our confidence and picking up more points and that's what we've done."

Interesting time to play Arsenal with Henry back...... but having said that, they are carrying a lot of injuries within their squad, so I reckon we're in with a real shout.... I hope we field a full strength squad for the FA cup tie..... be nice if we could defend our title..... Let the young 'uns have a run-out in the Carling cup..... with a few wise, old heads thrown in to lead the way.....

I'm dreaming of a cup treble this year..... so Rafa, don't take these games too lightly.... :D

C'mon you reds!!!

there is no chance he will play 2 completly different sides against arsenal in the two games

If we beat them in the first game then he ownt change much for the second

Arrangements for tickets in the eventuality of a Replay.  (For those who are actually going the game), as opposed to the rest of us who will unfortunately be spread all over the couch in front of the box with a few cans of ale close to hand  :no

I reckon Rafa's most telling statement was the one about the match being at home, we don't have the best away record Vs the Gooners but conversely we seem to get the better of them 99% of the time at Anfield.
A win double is a must boys..... Think I'm gonna have a couple of quid on it with Skybet!

i think rafa will defo pick a strong side for the FA cup tie and then make a couple of changes for the carling cup tie. i dont think he'll change the central midfield but i reckon he'll change the forwards and one or two others too...

I think Rafa`ll put out a strong side on the weekend, dare i say a unchanged team? proberly not but i do not think it will be far off. Maybe Bellamy, Garcia in.
If we win expect the changes and a few youngsters.

If we draw were fu.cked  :D  But then were proberly a bit better equiped if we do, but then they dont have Barca, so :censored: a draw.
Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,
