I like the old Doctor Who far more than the new one....(there ive come out and said it!)  Ok the current series has had a much needed shot in the arm, true. But they seem to have taken away much of the 'Darker' element of the programme..Instead concentrating on 'similar' themes, then repeating them again throughout.  Heck, they brought back the Daleks (which for me was a Masterstroke) The Cybermen were....ok, in parts.  But there seems to be a little too much 'comedy' and 'safe' ground being covered... Half of the Monsters/villains are far from 'Psychologically disturbing' which for me was the whole appeal of the series up until Sylvester McCoy ruined it.  Of course i realise the Marketing strategy is aimed at families....(it always was though).  the new Aliens may well look scary, but there voices aint (re:Cybermen) how cak were the modulation effects used on them.  Sigh....maybe its me and im going senile, but give me Tom Baker/Pertwee anyday over Tennant/Ecclestone (as creditable as they are) the programme now has become the Cutesy,cliched/over-marketed behemoth it always wished itself to be in the seventies but couldnt quite overcome the 'raw' edge it so refreshingly presented. Dont get me wrong..they've done wonders with the team designated to bring the thing back to our screens (with merit) and in a way, im being terribly short-sighted. But all the technical prosthetic effects and costumery in the world cant invoke the same type of 'Fear' i remember succumbing to as an awe-struck lad on a satdy teatime. For example, the Theme tune has been jazzed up and re-processed beyond all intention of its original impact. I could go on...the monsters, the wobbly sets...the variety of 'naffness' ...they're all sadly missed.  Put simply the old Dr Who encapsulated all things terrifyingly entertaining (in my head anyway). Nothing is left to the imagination now. The new is, ..the new. And its a poorer effort for it.  Kids love it...years ago i used to dread it! but try tearing me away from the screen....As for Torchwood..scuse me while i switch off!

the problem is mate is nostalgia, when we look back everything seemed better. its a cult thing i think and wanting to be part of an exclusive group, wanting to say you were there from the start.

this is why manure and chavski fans want to tell us they have supported the teams since 1920 when we know they have supported them for a couple of years

funny that peewee....cos on a saturday morning they show all these omnibus episodes from way back, and to be honest they look s.*i*e.  Pretty much all of 'em.  Cult is probably as good a description as any.... Its a paradoxical conundrum- this whole hindsight thing though.  On the one hand (paired with nostalgia) its a great tool for remembering fondly, if not mistakenly how things appeared to be.  But on the other (when reality slaps you in the face) you come to feel cynical and dismissive of all things inferior...because lets face it everything back 'in the day' was better (wasn't it)  ???  course it werent....its just that most things these days are a million miles away from being anything but capable of staying the course.. i mean you've only to have a peep at the music charts. But then, if we (as an audience) arent willing to embrace the new....what future is there for anything to become cherished or regarded at all?  It simply has to do with maturity i suspect.

i agree totally, i dont think all programmes were :censored: though to be fair, I dont think the sweeney could ever be as good, and i think the remake of the proffessionals was dire. some programmes shouldnt be changed. however Dr Who by its very nature is time travel so i suppose it has to change with the times  :D
