Ray houghton - Passion

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Big Niall » Fri Jun 18, 2004 6:24 pm

I saw Ray Houghton in an interview for 30 mins on RTE last night.

Even after more than a decade away from LFC, you can tell he loves the club so match, (mentioned how sad he was to see Souness, Evans & GH lead the club to nowhere).

I wonder how many of the non scouse lads in the current team would speak about LFC like this a decade after they left.

Don't think Houghton likes Souness much, mentioned how he, Beardsley, McMahon, Staunton all let go too soon.

What a screw up.Good to see the passion in ex players though.

funny you mention ray houghton - did you know that it's exactly 10 years ago to this day that he scored the winner against italy in giant's stadium at the world cup!!

in response to your point - yes, its nice to see ex-players showing a genuine love and passion for this club(i saw the interview too)

Houghton was a smashing player and made a huge contribution to Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool team.  I remember him scoring a header in a Merseyside derby around 1988 from a brilliant Barnes cross.....he also scored the first goal in the famous 5-0 win over Notts Forest.  However, while he makes some good points as a pundit I find him too boring and serious for television.....bring back Big Ron.

Yes... bring back big Ron so that he can focus on the players colour and compare his own fake tan to theirs.!. do you actually know what the guy said? it's outrageous to suggest bringing that ****head back!

as far as punditory goes ray houghton should stick to the day job. did the man ever hear of complementing players rather than cribbing for 90 mins.

as for big ron, anyone who coined the term ''lightening slow'' should be shot.

Ray Houghton, I remember him as a player who does not stop running, works very hard and makes good diagonal passes to Aldo or Barnes or Beardsley that springs offside traps and create scoring chances.

Wonderful player and more often than not saves his best games when he plays against England for the Rep of Ireland.

June 1988 in Stuttgart at Euro '88: Rep. of Ireland 1 England 0.  Houghton scored a rare header.  In that game alone five Liverpool players were playing (Barnes, Beardsley, Whelan, Aldridge, Houghton).  McMahon may have been in the England squad (can't quite remember for sure) and Lawrenson played in the qualifying campaign for Ireland but had to retire through injury just before the finals.
