Oh ! Take me back to dear old Blighty,
Put me on the train for London Town,
Take me anywhere,
Drop me anywhere,
Liverpool, Leeds or Birmingham
But I don't care,
I should like to see my ...

I don't bless them
Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes
Hemmed in like a boar between arches
Her very Lowness with a head in a sling
I'm truly sorry - but it sounds like a wonderful thing

I said Charles, don't you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your Mother's bridal veil ?
Oh ...
And so, I checked all the registered historical facts
And I was shocked into shame to discover
How I'm the 18th pale descendant
Of some old queen or other

Oh, has the world changed, or have I changed ?
Oh has the world changed, or have I changed ?

Some 9-year old tough who peddles drugs
I swear to God
I swear : I never even knew what drugs were
Oh ...
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
But when you're tied to your Mother's apron
No-one talks about castration
Oh ...

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
Like love and law and poverty
Oh, these are the things that kill me

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
But the rain that flattens my hair ...
Oh, these are the things that kill me

All their lies about make-up and long hair, are still there

Past the Pub who saps your body
And the church who'll snatch your money
The Queen is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb
Past the Pub that wrecks your body
And the church - all they want is your money
The Queen is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb

Life is very long, when you're lonely
Life is very long, when you're lonely
Life is very long, when you're lonely
Life is very long, when you're lonely

The Smiths are a very good band, the Morrissey and Marr song writing partnership was excellent one of the best musical partnership's I've ever come across and that's above Lennon and McCartney. I wouldn't say they're the British band of all time, but they are certainly up there with the best.  The Queen is dead album isn’t a patch on Strangeways, Here we come and the song the Queen is dead isn’t there best song.

The Beatles were a great band, they are pioneers of modern music, like Hendrix, Sex pistols, The Clash, The Jam, Bob Dylan, a lot of the Beatles songs are quite modern, they were definitely before their time, but whether they are the greatest band to ever grace music is entirely down to personal taste.  I love them none the less, but The Smiths were voted the most influential band of all time by a large proportion of the world in a world wide poll a few years ago, either way both bands were special bands who helped shape music back in the 1960’s and 1980’s and they have helped shape modern day music.

definately mate. As you say bands model themselves on the beatles, even the likes of Oasis.

Also I think Queen arguably have a right to be up there with the very best.

Queen is a legendary too, I like a fair few of their songs, but they aren't one of my favourite bands, but they up there with the best though. Freddie's ability to make the stage his own was something special. Oasis got some of their influence from The Beatles, almost all bands will have, even Ozzy Osbourne says Black Sabbath's main influence were the Beatles, but Noel said in a few interviews that although the Beatles were an influence the major influence to Oasis was The Jam.

Why does everyone always bring the beatles into it?
Tghats a different era. if we mention the beatles and hendrix then we should mention mozart and beethoven, fom more or less the saem time ;)

id agree, the smiths are one of the best bands, if it wasnt for the smiths music would be nothing what it is today (i know, same as beatles blah dee blah doo)

If you didn't have people like Mozart and Beethoven, you wouldn't have had The Beatles, Hendrix, Johnny Cash etc. If you didn't have them you wouldn't have Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, The Smiths, Blur and Oasis. If you didn't have those bands you wouldn't have bands like Maximo Park and so on and if you didn't have bands like Maximo Park we wouldn't have anything listen to.

That was Adam who bought up The Beatles, all I did was bring up the Lennon and McCartney song writing partnership, which wrote songs for other artists, not just The Beatles.

Some of their later stuff was actually very good, Sgt Pepper is an amazing band, not bad for a band who spent most of their time smoking weed.  :D

Smiths

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - its serious
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - its really serious

There were times when I could
Have murdered her
(but you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)

No, I dont want to see her

Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do ...

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - its serious
My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye

There were times when I could
Have strangled her
(but you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)
Would you please
Let me see her !

Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do ...
Let me whisper my last goodbyes

I know - its serious

Worra load of shi'te

Beatles

Wednesday morning at five o'clock
as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen
clutching her handkerchief
Quietly turning the back door key
Stepping outside she is free

She (we gave her most of our lives)
is leaving (sacrificed most of our lives)
home (we gave her everything money could buy)
She's leaving home after living alone for
so many years (bye bye)

Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband
Daddy our baby's gone
Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly
How could she do this to me

She (We never thought of ourselves)
is leaving (never a thought for ourselves)
home (we struggled hard all our lives to get by)
She's leaving home after living alone for
so many years (bye bye)

Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment she made
Meeting a man from the motor trade

She (what did we do that was wrong)
is having (we didn't know it was wrong)
fun (fun is the one thing that money can't buy)
Something inside that was always denied for
so many years (bye bye)
She's leaving home (bye bye)

Thats what you call a song :D
