I'm not one of Kewell's biggest fans but when I look at our left at the moment, I can't help but think that having Harry there would make things a lot better.

There's just something that makes me feel Harry & Riise have this great understanding that even if it doesn't completely light up our left, at least it keeps it solid and reliable. All of us, at the end of last season, wanted something more than just SOLID. Fine, so Gonzalez's the next big young thing, we don't need slow old fragile Harry anymore. But look at our current situation on the left and tell me honestly a Harry from last season wouldn't have been good enough...

I've said in the Kewell thread that we definitely miss him but it may be instructive to look at who played LM at this stage last season while Harry was struggling with fitness.

Interestingly, it was Garcia that deputized at LM the most with Kewell and Zenden both out injured.  Sure, Riise played at LM a couple of times but Garcia was on the teamsheet more often than not at LM before Kewell regained fitness (Harry was a sub for much of November and gradually became the first choice LM in December).

Garcia's starts at LM also happened to coincide with a run of wins for us (starting against West Ham on Oct. 29th), with most coming as cleansheets.  Garcia managed to chip in with 3 goals during that period.  So, little Luis may not exactly be the liability that most now consider him to be at left midfield. ???

IMHO in nowadays football playing two strikers and two pure wingers is a risk you can't assume.

We tried that in Sheffield Utd away and we paid for it (Alonso paid the toll).

Last year as a general rule with few exceptions, when we played Kewell on the left, we played a midfielder on the right, normally Gerrard, with success. When we played LG on the right we played often with Riise on the left, to be more consistent.

The irruption of Pennant, and seeking that balance, and the confidence Rafa has in Gerrard has provoked (for the dismal of many) that we have seen Gerrard in the left this season.

So who I'd play on the left? it depends on who I put in other places. If Pennant is playing, I'd play Riise or Gerrard (with all due respect to the best player on the team). If I was playing Gerrard on the right, I'd use Gonzalez or Kewell.

What I wouldn't try again is to play two pure wingers again, with two strikers.

I must admit I'm slightly dissapointed  with Gonzalez evolution so far, hope he starts to be more useful for the squad soon.

To be fair, Sabre, he has scored two vital goals in what few minutes he's had so he's been great value for minutes (and money) so far.

It just seems like Rafa wants to be very careful with him and bed him in nice and slowly.  Not knowing much about the player besides your comments, I can't speak to why he's being treated so cautiously but the gaffer's clearly sticking to that plan.

Who knows, maybe he'll play in France tomorrow, have a blinder and force his way into Rafa's reckoning like Sissoko and Agger have?

Very true.

I'm slightly dissapointed, because I try always to be rational and not color blinded to talk about players, and I said here he was going to be an impact. An impact as in inmediate impact. I was sure of that, I wouldn't have talked about him that way if I wasn't impressed. Not that it was just me, Atletico Madrid and Deportivo were clearly interested.

And to be honest I thought a player of his abilities was going to play more than he has, as -you know we all do have a pride- the Spanish league is not a joke. I expected a quick adaptation, like Alonso but in the version of a winger.

I'm simply dissapointed because I wasn't right  and If you are supposed to be the correspondant of the LFC fans in Spain, you try to be right  :D

No worries, mate...no one's blaming you.  We all know, after all, that Rafa's rotation policy is to blame for Gonzales' slow start!  :;):

In all seriousness, I think the whole work permit saga generated a lot of unnecessary expectation.  Perhaps the lad is just not ready for a consistent run in the first team.  Or, perhaps Rafa is trying to keep him out of the limelight now so we're not let down while he adjusts.  Like Agger, he might need a few months to adjust to the team and the league before he shows what he's capable of.

In any case, it's not like he's let himself or the team down when he's played--he's shown good commitment and a real eye for goal.  I suspect we'll see more and more of him as the season progresses and that he'll play an important part in the campaign yet.  :)

I would have Gonzalez as my 1st choice. Kewell is good there aswell. Riise can play there if he is told to. However, i prefer him at left back. :p
