Well, hopefully we'll get Alonso back soon.  Fook me, we may need to do an England and employ Carra in the holding midfield role!

wait for it......................................................hamann.  :nod

Er Hamann has missed the first couple of months due to injury and he can't now break into the Man City XI.

Well, now that Stevie's back in his preferred CM position, I'm confident he can do the job of two men there.  Let's just line up like this:

                            Reina

Finnan           Carra          Agger           Riise

Pennant               GERRARD                Garcia

                     Kuyt            Crouch

Pennant and Garcia on the flanks with Gerrard alone in the midfield? We'd be slaughtered. If you haven't noticied, Pennant is like Garcia when it comes to posssesion. Except he hasn't produced brilliance that has won us a game while Garcia has.

They're too wasteful in possession and Gerrard would be trying to win the ball back that they lost for most of the game.

Agger will probably most likely play in the center. Benitez mentioned how versitile he is and how he isn't afraid to play him in different positions. That was before the City game, and he played as a LB there [he played there in Denmark as well].

He'll be our holding midfielder on Wed.

-------------------Reina---------------

----Finnan----Carragher-----Hyypia------Riise------

---------------------Agger-----------------

----Garcia-----------Gerrard---------------Aurelio----

-----------------Crouch-------------Kuyt-------

Or have Paletta play as LB, and Riise on the left-flank.

as i said...the irony of it (not the reality).  im well aware of Hamanns situation. the fact he left (for reasons understood)  however, hits home at times like this....the 'wait for it.....hamann' comment was in anticipation of another onslaught extoling the virtues of hanging onto him for another season. And not, as youv'e mistakenly presumed it to mean, my ignorance ...(why does it need further clarification anyway - your a sensible chap, im certain you can decipher innuendo ?)

Was a joke, mate.  See, people are always going on about how awesome Stevie is in the centre............

I did wonder how that wasnt taken as a joke.

As annoying as this CM problem is, i find it quite interesting to see what Rafa will do.

- will he change the formation;
- will he play a defender (JC,Agger, Riise) in the holding role to allow Stevie G to get forward;
- will he introduce some young blood;
- will he suprprise us all with something completely different;

Personally im quite looking forward to seeing how Rafa approaches was could be a very tricky decision in the next three games until Alonso supposedly returns against Fulham.

Whatever Rafa decides, The team certainly need to show some charachter, pull together and get through this situation.

I'd give one of the young lads a chance personally. Peltier or Guthrie. I can see the merits in playing Agger or even Carra there, but what does that say to the natural central midfielders in the reserves?

It would be a massive blow to them and would pretty much show them that they're wasting their time here.

Guthrie has improved a lot, and seems a tidy player. My understanding is that Peltier is more used to playing the anchor role so I would be more inclined to give him the shirt than the more attack minded Guthrie.

We are finally keeping clean sheets and looking a lot more solid at the back. Let's not f#ck around with the defence again.
