They are pretty much always the cheapest along with Kuwait Airways, the Air India flight starts in Bombay, drops down in London to drop people off and collect more b4 flying on to JFK.

Mate believe me it won't be cheap to get over there on 3rd August when we play Roma cos I've tried everywhere and your Air India quote is the cheapest, I goto NYC twice a year and the cheapest times to go are between end of Jan to May.
I flew Air Lingus to NY from Dublin, the plane was an old tristar. It shook something rotten during takeoff and nearly all of the back seat trays fell down and the overhead lockers opened. Scary. Try Northwest they are normally pretty cheap if you dont mind a stopover.
I flew Air Lingus and the plane was fine, Northwest are a sister company to KLM, I flew KLM last Feb and they were ok as well plus you get to wander around Amsterdam Airport while you divert, I love that airport
