Wright-phillips  to west ham - Should we go for him ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

SWP didnt have a choice? So when he was touted around arsenal he was not allowed to go? He went for the money plain and simple.

Bellamy is a well known fan of the club as is kuyt. Alonso and Garcia were fans of Rafa, and the players we sign are fans of us and our manager, not money grabbers.

SWP is nto so weak that he was forced to play for cheatski, same as duff went to newcastle purely for the money. why would we want players like these?

Did arsenal get a bid accepted?  As soon as chelsea bid £21 mil for swp there was only one place he was going.  the only choice for swp was to refuse to go which would of made no sense.

He should of said no, he's wasted well over a season of football at Chelsea. He would of made better strides at Man City.

I don't think we can realistically throw £10m at a position we've only just thrown £6.7m at.

Although Pennant hasn't set our right wing on fire, I do think there's more to come. It would help if he was given a good couple of months in the side to get a bit of confidence and momentum going.

That said though, I've liked SWP for years, and he's one of those niggly wingers that'll torment a full back all day long. If it was peanuts I'd take him in a heartbeat, but I think realistically Rafa's made his investment on that flank for this season and now he's going to have to live with it.

I have been giving this some consideration and think we should make an offer. SWP would be a big improvement on what we have, we only have one genuine RM Pennant (Gerrard should be classed as CM)and maybe SWP will show some balls and refuse to go to the Hammers if he knows we are in for him.

He is a snip at £10million(if we have it) and is a RM who scores goals. I know he cant cross very well but his passing is first rate and he can tackle. I cant think of another young RM we could get for that price who's half as good as him.

We should be getting some extra money for qualifying for the knockout stages of the CL and for progressing in the League cup, so that plus the money we eventually get for Cisse should be enough, especially if we buy him on tic.

If we have serious hopes of winning EPL titles we need to be going for these types of players.

If nothing else, just think how funny it will look when he lines up next to Crouch :D

From the BBC

Chelsea have hinted they will look seriously at West Ham's offer
West Ham have made an approach to buy Chelsea's out-of-favour winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, and are thought to be willing to pay £10m.
"There has been interest from West Ham and they have officially approached us," Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said on Friday.

"We're not looking to sell our players but if we get an offer we'll have to look at it on a serious basis."

Chelsea bought Wright-Phillips, 25, for £21m from Manchester City in July 2005.
                      ---------------------------
As Pennant has failed to deliver up to now should we now go for Wright-Phillips  (If Chelsea would sell to us)and try to offload Pennant ?

I think we could perhaps get £4-5 million for Pennant off West Ham lol, if we snatched  Wright-Phillips away from them. Wright-Phillips  would also be cover for Finnan as he has played WB and full back before.

Am I the only one that thinks the fix might be in here?  SWP to West Ham in January, now under new management, in exchange for Tevez or Mascherano (or both?) next summer?

It'll be interesting to see what Chelsea do if other teams come in for SWP with a similar or better offer.  Will they listen or is it West Ham or nobody?

Setting the conspiracy theory aside, I think:

1) We can't be buying Pennant's replacement just yet (the lad needs at least a year)
2) Chelsea are still never going to sell to us, despite our slide from title contender status

I would be more willing to go with the conspiracy theory if I thought either player was wanted or needed by Chelsea. Good though both players are, they are no better than others that Chelsea's cheque book could get.(Maybe lower priced, but are Chelsea that concerned about the price?)

You think that we should lose out on a very good player because of some unwritten rule that we have to give a player at least 12months to prove himself? What about Kromkamp, Pellegrino , or the players who never got a chance like Dundee or Diomede. Or Dean Saunders who Souness tried to swop after only 6 games for us.

I think if SWP made a stand and said Liverpool or nothing Chelsea would sell to us, and I cant believe SWP would want to go to West Ham.

Just re read what I wrote and it sounds angrier than I intended. Sorry Bob.

Spot on as usual. And to be honest even if they have just been takenover its not like there in the Champions League for next year so I doubt SWP would even more there in any more than a year long loan move if that.

Ian Wright said SWP wants to win things, and I dont expect West Ham to be challanging for the Premiership next season.

Actually, you make some good points.  Benitez has shown a remarkable clarity of vision when players have not been up for it and he's bombed them out quickly.  I'm not convinced he's got Pennant in that category just yet but an available SWP might change his thinking.  But, Rafa's a pragmatist and I wonder if he'd consider paying 10+ million for SWP to be too dear.  For some reason, I just don't see him moving Pennant out at this stage to make way for SWP.

On the other side of the equation, I suppose SWP could put pressure on Chelsea to talk to us but I'm not convinced he's that focused on playing for us, for one.  For two, I don't think he has the leverage to make Chelsea negotiate.  We saw how long they held out with Gallas, and he was a lot closer to Chelsea's starting 11.  Plus, the whole move for Ashley Cole made it easier for Gallas and Arsenal to push for a swop deal.  I could see Chelsea telling SWP he'll continue to rot in reserves unless the West Ham deal goes through.

Call me a cynic on this one, but, like Duff before him, I think our chance to get SWP has passed and we'll need to move on.

All those who went to West Ham seems a flopPy plant.. Mascherano, Tevez etc.. So, Wright Phillips should consider this offer seriously.. Cheers..

I agree with Bob:

If Wright-Phillips says "Kenyon - I want to go to Liverpool", the bald barsteward will most likely come back with the much considered and highly intelligent response of "F*ck you".

They will never sell a player to us while that prat Moris is the manager.
