Was Souness that central to the team.  Don't forget that we reached the european cup final the year after he left for Sampdoria and followed that up by winning the double in '86.

Personally, i'd go for Hughes.  As captain from '73 to '79 we had tremendous success.  He captained league championship, European cup, UEFA cup and F.A. cup winning teams.  His enthusiasm on the pitch was infectious, as seen in his reactions to scoring.  Also, leading the club to winning back to back european cups adds a few bonus points.

I have been a fan since 1976, so I have seen the team from "Crazy Horse" Emlyn Hughes onwards.

As a player and a leader, Souness tops the lot. In my opinion, he was one of our all-time best players and should have been captain a lot earlier. A captain needs to be fiercely competitive with the drive to lift his colleagues when the going gets tough and commands the respect from all of the other players, apart from having great talents of his own.

Make no mistake, Gerrard also have this quality but he has not reached his full potential yet and would need a few years more for us to judge him. I really like him and would hope that he has the chance to lift the premiership trophy at least once in his career.

While Shanks and Paisley were in charge we didn't need captains - the team could feel the looks from the bench!!!

If it wasn't for the past you'd be following someone else!
We were in the 2nd Division when I started - never thought about another team to follow- Shanks made us what we are , aknowledge it!!!

What are the odds in hearing that remark everytime he's mentioned ???

JohnBull... i support my local team lad. The team i was brought upto support. Bearing in mind i have been going to games since i was 9... i'm now 11... look at where the club where when i started to learn about the game properly.

So don't sit there and have the cheek to imply i'm some sort of glory hunter.

I'd love to think you'd have been on the Kop with us when we were in the Second Division - No doubt you'd have been screaming to keep Walsh- nice boy that he was.
