yes folks..just like the F.A cup in 01 and 06. those with excellent memories stretching all the way back to the turn of this current century will indeed accurately recall that, Liverpool were the first winners of the Carling cup at the millenium stadium in 2001- and maybe the last...

I think last nights defeat for the Mancs just shows that Rafa's dastardly cunning plan is starting to work. He rotates at the begining of the season before the cup matches start, and gets all the other teams worrying about being tired at end of the season , so they start to rotate and get knocked out of the cups. Meanwhile Rafa starts to pick a settled team and wins all the cups(and hopefully the league).

They had virtually a full team of internationals out, whether they started against us or not.
Look at the line-up below.

Kuszczak, O'Shea (Lee 75), Brown, Silvestre, Heinze, Ronaldo, David Jones (Shawcross 90), Fletcher, Richardson, Smith (Evra 60), Rooney.
Subs Not Used: Heaton, Rose

There is only Jones out of them that isnt a full international.

I didnt watch the start as i thought united would batter them, after seeing it was 1-0 at halt time i watched the second half and thought that Southend looked like they could of sneaked a second.

Back to us v Birmingham and i expect a similar side to the one that beat Reading, mainly squad players but again like uniteds line-up....players that are sometimes/often in the first 11, i think we will be too strong and expect a 2-0 win.
Although it will be a tough game.

i wasn't saying they are not internationals... i was mearly replying to weringo who said they were nearly at full-strength. utd at "Full strength" would have been:

Van der Sar
neville
ferdinand
Vidic
Heinze
giggs
carrick
scoles
ronaldo
rooney
saha

-it would be like saying we're going to play a near full strength team tonight with warnock, agger, pennant, alonso, sissoko, zenden, gonzalez, fowler, bellamy and crouch set to feature - all of whome have played in the league before this season.

but anyway i dont want it to sound like im defending them in any way, just replying to a comment of them being nearly at full strength - which imo they were no-way near full strength.

Rafa Benitez has asked summer signing Jermaine Pennant to spill the beans on former club Birmingham City as the Reds prepare to visit St Andrew’s on Wednesday.
The winger, who hopes to feature against his old club in the Carling Cup, warned his manager to expect a physical game.

Rafa said: "I was asking him about how they will play and which players, things that we know but he knows especially.

"He said it would be a very difficult game because they will press us, play a physical game and be good in the air."

Meanwhile, the Spaniard believes Pennant is proving himself to be one of the best wingers in the top flight.

"I don't know a lot of right-wingers better than Pennant in the Premiership," said Rafa.

"He can cross with a player close to him and the crosses are really good. He can cross with one touch after receiving the ball. He is a player with a lot of quality.

"With Kuyt and with Crouch he is a good signing because he gives us another kind of possibility."

I back Fowler to really shine tonight. It's a tailor-made occasion for him, whoever he's alongside.

Maybe it'll be him and Bellamy up front - they looked very good together in pre-season, and that'd obviously keep Crouch and Kuyt fresh for Sunday's low-key trip to the Emirates.
