Benítez threat on Diao future

Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has expressed bewilderment at Salif Diao’s decision to reject a move to Recreativo de Huelva and said that the Senegal midfield player will be lucky to get a game for the club’s reserve team this season. Diao had agreed to join the Primera Liga club before the close of the transfer window, only to pull out of the deal.

“As a player, the most important thing is to play. If you are not playing, you can’t show people that you are fit and a good player,” Benítez said. “He is training normally and maybe it’s a possibility he can play in the reserves, but at the moment we have young players and they have more options than him.”

What a total waster this fella is  :no , even the young kids are intention for a start before him.
His career is over, how can this lazy b@stard just sit around doing feckall without no shame.
We could be paying a decent player his wages.
He makes my blood boil he really does.

Gerrard was right for calling him a tit in his book.

The sad thing is that if we could have got rid of Diao earlier, maybe Hamann might have been able to stay for another year. :(

Benitez concern over Diao's lack of playing timeSep 15 2006

By Nick Smith, Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ has expressed his concern that Salif Diao will be difficult to sell when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Diao is facing more than three months out of action following his failure to secure a move to a new club in the summer - something which could drastically reduce his market value.

The Senegal midfielder is not in Benitez's first team plans, and the Liverpool manager would rather see a reserve team centred on young players trying to make the grade.

Diao is in the final year of his contract and despite there being little prospect of him playing football while he stays at Anfield, he is still in full training and staying in shape.

But he is set for more than three months with little or no opportunity to put himself in the shop window for the next round of transfer dealings in January.

And Benitez is frustrated that the difficulty in offloading Diao will only increase in the winter - as well as him taking up valuable space on the wage bill.

He said: "Sometimes it depends on the people around the players, and if they have good advice or bad advice or bad advisors.

"In this case, I think that as a player the most important thing is to play. If you don't play, you cannot show other people what you can do.

"He is fit, he is training normally, and it is not a problem. He is a very good professional and is training every day without a problem.

"But without games, other teams cannot see this. We will see how we can use Salif, and it's a possibility he can play for the reserves.

"But we have young players in the reserves, and if it's a choice between using young players and senior players, I would say to Gary (Ablett) to use the young players."

Diao, 29, joined Liverpool in the summer of 2002 from French club Sedan, after an impressive showing in the World Cup when Senegal got to the quarter-finals.

The £5million signing played 26 Premiership games that year but has made only 11 since, his last coming at Norwich in January 2005.

Diao spent most of last season on loan at Portsmouth and an attempt to join Charlton Athletic in the summer fell through.

Benitez was happy for him to go at the right price, but a move that was lined up for Diao to join Spanish side Recreativo, who also signed Florent Sinama-Pongolle from Liverpool, also collapsed.

"I was talking with Recreativo and everything was almost done, but then at the last minute things changed," said Benitez.

Ooops..

My bad. :D

But still, I think he would, and should, have known that his departure would be best for both him and the club.

He's nearly 30, hasnt featured in many games.. and I'd be surprised if any club playing top-flight football in any league would take him.

If there was any chance of him saving his career, I think he's done away with it poorly by not joining Recretivo. He still has ONE last chance, in January, to join another club where he can actually play football, but if he fucks that one up too.. there is no way any club would take him.

Who wants a 30 something dread-locked midfielder demanding a considerable wage who hasnt played football in 2 odd years?

We're basically giving him away now. :D

What then if he becomes a Free Agent?

He is actually from a very wealthy family in Africa that own a chain of hotels, but he fell out with them by not working for them, he choose football instead, its a pity for us that he masquerades as a footballer, when really he is a total waster, he is wasting our time and his own.

I notice Houllier didnt come in for him to bring him to Lyon hey.

Ciggy. Just an ignorrant qusetion. When a player earns 45 thousand pounds per week is that for every week of the year or is it just for the start of the season till the last game?. I know the break is short in between so it would not make that much differnence. Just want to know if a player basically earns 45k x 52 weeks ??

Doesn't add up.

Only 22.2 K per week. Did you mean 2 million?
