Right I'll get straight to the point and just wait for the doom and gloom mongers to jump on the bandwagon.
That was truly painful to watch. We were sh#te from start to finish and to lose to them - especially like that - is f#cking sickening; I'm not looking forward to Monday at all when I have to go into work and face three of my colleagues who are Evertonians.
Having said that, I think there has been some hysteria on here (shocking I know), with the prize for rabid comment of the day going to whoever said "There goes our title challenge for another season". There also appears to be a little anti-Xabi bandwagon picking up steam, which is weird because, firstly, he's f#cking ace, and secondly he played alright today. In fact I think only him, Big Mo and, to a lesser extent, Gerrard can hold their heads up today of the eleven players who started the game.
The defence is a mess, plain and simple. I'm far from convinced by Aurelio and have yet to see anything from him in a Red shirt, bar one free kick, to suggest the hype about his dead ball ability is justified. Sami's lack of pace is glaring. I felt sure Rafa would move him on after his first season, but he proved me well wrong by adopting an offside trap and getting Pepe to sweep up behind. However, he was at fault (although not exclusively so), due his immobility, for the first two goals today. He was way out of position for the first one, causing everyone to shift across. For the second, any other defender around would have beaten Johnson to that ball. Obviously Carra had a mare when covering, but Sami should have had it dealt with by then. Carra clearly wasn't fully fit (although that doesn't explain his errors) and Finnan looks a little wobbly too - not surprising when everyone is collapsing around him. As for Pepe, he had a mare for the third, but I can't get too excited about it as we were already well beaten.
In midfield, the lack of width was glaring and I don't know why it so long to get Pennant on, considering he's been training all week. Up front, we were toothless. Neither Crouch nor Fowler gave them the slightest trouble. Playing two such immobile strikers would be fine if we'd whipped in a succession of dangerous crosses - but we didn't. I wanted to see Kuyt on straight away for the second half but by the time he did arrive, all belief was gone.
Overall, a very poor performance, and we need to defeat Chelsea to negate it. Thankfully the squad will be together for a while now without any outside disruptions. We need to regain our defensive solidity as soon as possible and the rest will come. Not easy with our current options at left back, but then again winning the league isn't easy. Let's now see what this squad is really made of. Roll on Eindhoven and Chelsea.
