I smell a draw of Spain against northern ireland.

1) Spanish games in the early September use to be traditionally shíte

2) Aragones doesn't seem to have learnt that an starting eleven with no wingers and no width doesn't work, we were absolutely shíte against Lietchstenstein last day. Only positive thing about the game is that Alonso could train some long passes of his own.

Sabre, I wasn't clear on your last sentence about Alonso.  Did he play and how did he look?  Also, Garcia scored a goal did he not?  How welll did he play?

Well I'm going to be bloody honest, Bad Bob.

I started watching the game thinking, hahaaa Alonso is playing and he's going to make a show of long passes proving all this forum members that say he's out of form wrong.

Truth is, that he started failing quite a lot of passes :)

But good news is that when the game advanced he improved his accuracy, and that's why I say that the game was good for him in order to get his form. Alonso's last 20 minutes of the first half were much better

And then well, the truth is that I got slept in the sofa due to the quality of the game and missed LG's goal  :D

Nice!  :D

Glad to hear about Alonso, mate, although I'm not worried.  He always starts slow but he is absolute class and he will click into gear for us soon.  I pay no heed to the few on here that suggest he's overrated, way off the pace, etc.  Xabi's at the heart of all that's great with our current squad and will prove all of his doubters wrong soon enough!

Well I got slept about min 60, so I've read the articles of Marca about the game and according to them the goal was a good control with the chest and smashed the ball as it was falling, nice goal. According to them, there was a festival of passes of Alonso in the second half as well, only ruined by some decissions of the linesman.

I don't think we should we worried with him neither.

On a side note Reina was the second keeper in the game, and he seems to have relegated Cañizares from that spot in the squad, which is nice.

And I apologize for talking about this in the Northern Ireland team. My respects to Northern Ireland! Traditionally it hasn't been easy to win there.

I think its about time Laurie thought about using some of the other players he has in other leagues, not just the Premership, Championship and Scottish leagues. I'm not saying they would have made a lot of difference but at least if they are givin the chance to play for their National team they would give it their all. The team lacked passion. We where lucky they did'nt score more. Iceland did their homework and it paid of.
Laurie needs to make many changes  before Wednesdays match against Spain. Sproule and Lafferty up front with Healy. Baird in midfield with Elliot and Davis. McAuley in the centre with Huges and  Duff and McCann as fullbacks and Carroll back in goal. Formation 4 3 3.....................
I'm looking forward to Wednesday game although I think Spain will win.

No Kazza,i never went!I used to go to all the home games years ago but i lost interest really!
I did watch it on TV though !
We were absolutely shameful and dire to especially at the back!Under other managers i would not have been surprised at this result but i thought we had moved on a bit under Sanchez! The one thing that stood out was the room Gudjonsen was given...unbeleivable that their best player was allowed to run riot and basically do what he wanted!

All 3 goals were basiclly avoidable and down to pathetic schoollboy errors in defence!

I dunno i guess i just expected more after beating England and winning away to Finland..but then agin N Ireland have always been unpredictable!
I really hope the players can lift their chins and go out on Wed night and get themselves back a bit of respect...because to be beaten like that at home in an important game is embaressing!

The IFA have offered the players £1m between them if they qualify as a bonus......sad to say its looking like the safest £1m in the world!

We live in hope!  :D

I went, and it was freakin awful - boring. Tony Capaldi is the worst footballer I've ever seen. Lawrie's tactics were lacking as well - why did Gudjohnsen have so much space? The whole team gave up when Iceland scored their third.

It was a let down because the supporters actually expected NI to get a result for once. Im concerned we could get a hiding against Spain.

Thats what I'm afraid of. Although Sabre said that Spain dont play well in September, we dont play well most of the time. We cant live of the England score for ever. ( although it would be nice).  Why Lawrie insists on playing players that are past their sell by date and from mainland teams I'll never know. Theres quite a few players from the Irish Leagues that would give their right arms to play for OWC. People like Peter Thompson, Glen Ferguson, Michael Halliday, Sean Holmes and Jody Tolan (to name a few, who score nearly every week for their clubs). I remember when Andy Smith (Glentoran) went to play on the mainland and the next thing you know hes on the bench for OWC. He would never have been on the bench had he not moved to play for a mainland team. Come on Lawrie give the wee men a chance, you never know what might happen!!!!

I know what you are saying Kazza some of the Irish league players are very passionate!
Unfortunately to put them on the international stage would be suicide..they are scoring and playing well in an amateur league!
To field some of these players you mention aginst any international team never mind Spain would be insane!
A lot of our players are playing in the championship and League one, they train 6-7 days a week and are career footballers! The Irish league players train about 2 or 3 nights a week for 2 hours at a time, they simply are not fit enough or good enough!
I know what you are saying cause you'd love to see a few Glenmen on:D but i cant see it happening or think it should!
We really need to hope we play outta our skin tomorrow and Spain are having a very bad day!

FWIW, if you want to know who's going to play in Spain for bets and all that, only two changes in the Spanish Squad, Xabi will be playing  instead of Cesc Fabregas, and Antonio Lopez will be playing instead of Pernia

This is going to be  starting eleven almost for sure

-----------Casillas-----------

Sergio Ramos   Puyol  Pablo    Antonio Lopez

--------------Albelda

------Xabi Alonso           Xabi

                 Raul

<-----  Villa          Torres ---->

No width. If N.Ireland manages to gain quite a lot of corners and free kicks, our CB might struggle, as our aerial power is not big whatsoever. Wouldn't be surprised it was a boring 0-0.

I understand where you are coming from Barry, but quite a few of them are fulltime now. But I can understand them not being as fit as the other fulltime players and it would be suicide to put them on the pitch, but he could have them on the bench as subs???
Anyway, who would your prefered starting 11 be? MIne would be....
--------------Taylor--------------
------------------------------------
------Baird -- Duff -- Hughes----
------------------------------------
-------------Clingan---------------
--Gillespie ------------- Brunt ---
-------- Davis ---------------------
----------------------- Sproule ----
---------Healy ---- Feeney --------
But thats only my prediction. I was on the IFA site and Jonathan Evans (Manu) havs been drafted for the team. Cant say I have ever seen him play. Does anyone know what hes like?

I have to finish working in 10m, then take a coffee with gf, then pretend I'm so tired I must go home to sleep, then turn on tv and the internet, and I'll be commenting the clash here.

Good luck mate :)

Well, here I am, I told her the truth after all.

After our ridiculous military based-no-lyrics anthem, and the beautiful god save the queen. The game starts.

Min 2. Our supposedly proffesional players forgot that there's no off side when there are throw in situations and left alone an Irish player. Typical Spanish action in september.
