Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool were today unveiled as England's most popular team amongst rival fans in a poll conducted by a national men's magazine.
Weekly magazine Nuts commissioned the poll to try and find out who the country's football fans considered their second favourite club behind their own team.

The results made interesting reading with 15% of all those asked revealing Liverpool would be their 'second' team or the club they'd most like to achieve success after their own side.

Liverpool topped the pool by a clear 5% with West Ham United and Wigan coming in second and third respectively. Aston Villa finished bottom of the Premiership popularity table with Arsenal and Chelsea completing the relegation places.

"Liverpool have provided a huge amount of entertainment, over the last year or so starting with the Champions League win and culminating in the stunning Steven Gerrard goal in the FA Cup Final," explains Gershon Portnoi, the Nuts Sports Editor.

"I think The Toon's popularity may have taken a dip during Graeme Souness' time at the helm. It's great to see Wigan and West Ham up there. Everyone loves an underdog and they certainly entertained and gave many of the bigger clubs a scare last season."

The Premiership Popularity Table in full

1. Liverpool: 15%
2. West Ham: 10%
3. Wigan: 9%
4. Newcastle: 8.5%
5. Tottenham Hotspur: 7%
6. Bolton: 7%
7. Charlton: 6%
8. Manchester United: 6%
9. Portsmouth: 5%
10. Manchester City: 4%
11. Watford: 3.5%
12. Reading: 3.5%
13. Everton: 3%
14. Fulham: 3%
15. Blackburn 3%
16. Sheffield United: 2.5%
17. Middlesbrough: 2.5%
18. Chelsea: 2%
19. Arsenal: 1.5%
20. Aston Villa: 1%

I'm glad to see that fans of other clubs seem to appreciate the fact that we're up there competing with the big boys with limited funds in comparison.

I think a lot of this is down to the Istanbul factor, but having spoken to friends who support other teams, no-one regards us as a dirty team. Every seaon we're top or near the top of the fair play league, and you never see us using chelsea-esque tactics like crowding round the ref, diving, or dragging players down when defending corners.

Everyone on here knows we're the greatest team on the planet, but it is nice to hear it from neutrals from time to time.

BTW, I would've picked West Ham as my 2nd favourite, another club with a great history and supporters. Lets just hope this new link with Abramovich doesn't see them selling their souls.

hmm...i have to say, i've noticed the band waggon support is back.  I guess its good as long as they spend money on club shirts and stuff.

Also how are Bolton up there? They play the most boring long ball football and are one of the most dirty teams.

I've always thought this "2nd Team" business was a bit strange.....? Even worse when people say they have a scottish team as well..... I know a lot of LFC fans follow Celtic but I've never seen the attraction myself.....

I can understand it, we moved to York when i was young. I wasn,t allowed to travel alone to Anfield, so I ended up going to Elland Road to watch Leeds Utd. That was the days of Lorimer, Giles, Bremmner and co. wasn,t that bad, just wasn,t Liverpool though. Anyway, point is, I still have a soft spot for them.

As I'm not from the north west I would probably say man city if I was forced to pick a 2nd team (the idea is a little silly tho). They had fowler playing for them, they hate man u, they have used good english players and their manager is the psycho :D

I wouldn't call Liverpool my second club, though I do always follow you lot and want you to win. My Mam an Dad moved to Preston in 1976 just before I was born. My dad is a Hull City fan (North End season ticket holder now though!) who took me on Anfield when I was a knipper seen as during the eighties Liverpool were the greatest club side in the world and North End were applying for re-election. When we were over in Hull visiting relatives I also went on Boothberry Park many times and through my Old Mans work pals also occaisionally went on Bumley (spit) and Bolton. Still went on Preston more often than not though. As an early teenager was when me and me mates really started following North End every week, and every now and then I went on the Kippax at Man City, with mates from Preston and Manchester as well as still going on The Kop at Anfield with mates from Preston and Liverpool, went on a different ground every weekend, still that was all before the Prem when prices suddenly went through the roof and train travel was cheap.

I miss those days.

Since then I've lived in Liverpool and think that the place is a great city.

(I've lived in Manchester too and think the same about there, is that alright?)
