SHEFFIELD UNITED VS LIVERPOOL - the premiership assault begins

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Dalglish » Sat Aug 19, 2006 11:52 pm

A lack lustre display against the overtly physical yet hard working Blades brings us a point on the opening game of the season. Last season we battered Boro at their place for 90 mins and came away with a point........

The injuries to Riise and Carragher seemed to unsettle us but thats probably clutching a bit.

We had  bad day at the office but usually when teams play as poorly as we did today they lose so maybe a point isn't such a bad thing after all. You always get quirky results at the beginning of the season and fair play to Sheff Utd for not laying down and letting us win.

:oh:  :no
The negativity on here really does astound me. Somebody show me were in the history of league football the championship trophy is handed out on the first day.
The result today wasn't good it WAS poor but there are 37 games to go and a maximum of 111 points to be claimed still. We won't claim all of them but we sure as hell ain't gonna lose all of them which you think we would the way some are reacting on here.

BADBOB I agree with your main post from earlier on; you've made some very levelheaded points there and obviously haven't gone flying off at the deep end like some.

Todays performance was way below par but I have to admit I did fear that some of the remarks on here earlier in the week were expecting a tough game but a convincing win none the less.
As for the players there were too many who were effectively still enjoying a saturday lie-in. From what I've seen in pre-season (which isn't much) Gerrard has been very sluggish at times and there were still signs of that in the 1st half today. Zenden has been hit and miss for me so far in CM but coming back from a long term injury may have something to do with it, but again he seemed to drift in and out of the game today.
Kromkamp  :no  his performance today was nothing short of dreadful and if he wants a future at the club needs to buck up his ideas. He has developed a penchant for giving away silly free-kicks that put unecessary pressure on the defence and has to get that out of his game. The idiotic attempt at the end to get a player booked by taking a free kick against an opponent cost us one last attack IMO.
Aurelio has to take the brunt of the blame for their goal as he just didn't track Hulse but the back four was a new combination that hasn't played together before and IS more likely to make these kinds of mistakes. (STILL THAT IS NO EXCUSE).

I have one question for the people questioning Rafa's team selection. For the past week there have been many, many proclamations of how we have such a strong squad this season and would be able to rotate the squad. Well that is what the manager did today and suddenly he is being accused of under estimating the opposition. This sounds just a little hypocritical to me but if I'd had a pound for everytime this sort of thing happened I'd be able to build us a new stadium and buy every season ticket holder a chauffeur driven limo to and from every game!

My advice to everyone is JUST CALM DOWN. Remember there are 37 chances to make todays result irrelevant.  :buttrock

We didn't play to our normal standards by any stretch of the imagination, but some people on here need to grow the f*ck up.

Fowler looked like what he is - a goal-poacher who's just come back from injury. Stop talking sh*t by saying he's not good enough, or that he will only "get a go" off the bench. Anyone with a quater of a brain knows that he's still the best finisher we've got, and with games comes fitness.

Zenden had a good game from where I was standing. Not inspiring, but solid enough.

Gerrard had a shocking first 50-odd minutes, and only came to life after a p*ss-poor attempt in the 2nd half.

Riise and JC were injured before half-time. That, my friends, is half of our defence. I doubt they'd have scored had Carra been on the pitch.

Finally - how anyone can expect us to fire on all cylinders this early is beyond me.

Be f*cking reasonable, you thick tw*ts. ???

Is it me or what.......but i actually thought as the match went on auerlio looked pretty good out there. He antispated a lot of SU moves and some good clearance.

Would say he will make a very good left back soon.

As for Kromkamp.... :no  His hairstyle sucks and his playing ability isn't that much better too.....

I got to watch the game last night and overall the performance was a dissjointed one. It was always gonig to be a hard graft of game to get a result against Sheffield U. At the moment there is no cohesion in the team which isnt suprising when six new players arrive and the team is being rotated. It will come I'm in time our rythm will be there and it will click.
Before the game I said Alonso should of played in the other thread, but tbh I thought our midfield did quite well. Zenden had a decent performance, and it wasnt because we didnt play Alonso we didnt win.
School-boy marking was at fault for there goal and Kronkamp was the culprit I'm afraid, while he was there ball watching some unknown called (who has now made a name for himself called) Hulse left him for dead and scored. Bellamy and Fowler had a nice 1, 2 in the first half and tried to link whenever they could, but it wasnt happening up top for them.
Mark Gonzalez looked to fast for himself and was slipping over everywhere :D  he's an obvious one who will need to adjust to the prem.
By the way, its good to see all the doom mungers out in force, (cough cough Oasis, not !) another nine months of them and I'll be ready to commit suicide FFS.

To be fair to rafa, i think he had 1 eye on the champ league qualifier (who knows, he might need the money we get from it to buy daniel alves  :D )...so he put on a relatively weak team.

I think everyone here will agree that if he had started Stevie G in the centre instead of zenden and pennant on the right, we could have easily won this match.

Ah...well 37 wins and 1 draw ain't that bad come may 2007...  :p

If you're happy with a draw against Sheff Utd, then that's fine, but I'm not and to throw away two vital points against Sheff Utd is very disappointing, everyone last season said " The Fulham game won't make much difference" when we lost 2-0 and come the end of the season, it made a huge difference. We should of won.

I'd rest Gerrard, Alonso and Bellamy, starting the game with the two new blokes, (it may be too physical a baptism for Gonzales) and Garcia uptop alonside crouch. Something like this:

                                                       Reina

                             Finnan      Carragher      Hyypia         Riise

                                Pennant    Zenden     Sissoko     Aurelio

                                            Crouch      Garcia

I'd have the big guns on the bench with the intention of giving them half an hour or so to really just top up the fitness levels. Hyypia would start over Agger only by a whisker as I feel certain they will bombard us from set-pieces.

To answer the point which was made on another thread, I think this team would have won the game, with the obvious rider that Kromkamp would have had to replace the injured Finnan.

I dont think anyone can deny its 2 points dropped.  We havent got the easiest of starts and I know think we need to win the next 2 games (everton away wont be easy) cos Chelsea could be a defeat.

Yes We Did Play Poor Yesterday , but we did play better than sheffield united , remember the chanses we had 1st half , Bellamy's shot just wide of the post , Bellamy's One-Two With Fowler which he miss controlled , Aurellio's free kick . We came to life after they scored which was due to very poor marking . When They Scored it was all Liverpool 2nd half untill we scored , after we scored the pressure eased off and we wasnt attacking them that much . Yes this was unfortunalty two points lost and there are very few positives that we can take from this , Riise looks like he's sprained his ankle and carragher looks like he 's slightly pulled something . With some very important games coming up over the next few weeks im more concerned about carra and riise than the two points lost.
