English manager - Why no good ones

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

guys like Steve Bruce, Alderdyce& Curbishely are doing well but there hasn't been any top english managers in a long time (probably since Clough at his peak).

Howard Wilkonson, George Graham, Graham Taylor are probably the best and they all seem pre-historic.

Why no great english managers coming up. Look at the old LFC teams, not one of the players is a great manager & John Barnes is a legend at Ibrox.

because top english managers are just not seen as being able to attract players from europe. the top clubs want managers who have won things to promote their club on a european level.

i have no doubt that the likes of bruce, curbishley and allardyce are good managers, as they have proved with linited resources, but until they win stuff, no big clubs will take a chance on them, which is a shame.

Curbishly and Bruce are doing a great job at their clubs but I don't think that they would be able to do it at Liverpool's level cos their is sooo much more presure and more expectation

I think we are still seeing the after effects of the bad days of the late 1980s and early 1990s when (with the exception of a few teams) English sides played the ball long, tackled hard, wore tight shorts, and had fish and chips and a pint of lager after training.

However, I have a feeling that when the next generation comes along, i.e. those who played in the 1990s we will see some good English managers.

I agree with you John Barnes Granny. The win, draw, lose first to the bar for booze guys will not make good managers. I remember talking to a former Norwich player from the 80s. He told me that if it was a little cold outside, it was common practice to have a drink in the dressing room just before the game.

I think Redtillhead missed the point of the barnes - Ibrox statement. He is a legend at Ibrox because he was so rubbish at Celtic

Duh!!!!!!

In my opinion there is just as much ability here as abroad but over the last few years it's become fashionable to have foreign coachs with different training methods. Anyone with a foreign accent sounds like he could be a good manager to a lot of people.

Yeah, wasn't Steve McLaren the first English manager since Roy Evans to win one of the big trophies this year?  That's about eight years isn't it?
