riise is a decent player...not outsanding ...nope ! ashley cole is !
if we get a good offer for him i think we'll be tempted to sell...
i see where ur coming from kopite-jud but..... riise isnt quite the best when it comes to defending, his attacking game is good but he is by no means indespensible for liverpool ! if aurelio can perform as good as he did in valencia... im sure he'll make that LB slot his ! we have good backup in warnock and i dnt see why we need to keep riise if we get a good offer for him (versatile or not) !

To be honest when I watched the game last night I though about Murph and Leons comments about Riise and agreed. He did not look comfortable defending or not comfortable and supportive enough to make us tighter at the back.

I admit that my views on him are changing although I dont agree with all Murph says and reckon he is a good squad member

JAR has been generally rock solid since his arrival, and to leap on him after one bad game is f*cking laughable.

Yes, Aurelio's arrival will put pressure on him to perform. I say: good. If Aurelio's as good as the little I've seen of him tells me he is, it'll be no bad thing. Competition for places is exactly what we need throughout the team.

there have been so many times jar has been worth his place that a poor pre season should not get the doubters on his back..he was part of a back 4 last year that conceded f*** all..if not left back get rid of kewell back up for gonzalez as zenden is c***..

Thats a bit extreme, but i reckon he's worth as much as Ashley Cole. His ability from long range is as good as Stevie G, he can hit a ball dead straight from 45 yards and he can throw it as far too. Ive always said this and ill say it again. JAR is one of the most underrated players in the Prem and i reckon any other team would jump to have him in their team (even Chavski). and no im not trying to say he is better than Robben but he's certainly more versatile and physical than him.

He looked like he was struggling against Haifa. I dont know if that was just pre season niggles that will be ironed out or perhaps the competiton of Aurelio and Gonzales is mentally getting to him.

Ive always been a Riise fan and hope that he does figure a lot this season but he did look worringly poor against what should have been inferior opposition.

Generally though he has always been one of our best performers. Hes scored some memorable goals and I hope he continues that trend this year.

Hyypia looked out of sorts cus he was covering for Riise against Haiffa. Although Murf has over cooked it with the shi.te comment, I agree with his conclusion that he is the weakest link in the back four.

Yes the back four broke records last season, but what kind of records would have been broken wit ha better left back ?

I will be revisiting this thread a few times over the course of the season to see if people change their views.

He may be the weakest link out of our defenders but considering how much quality we have in our back four there's no shame in that.
Admittedly he was raped by the right winger on Wednesday and looked poor, but that was the first competitive game of the season and if anyone is honest he didnt get much protection from Zenden.
He offers more than most defenders, he pops up with vital goals and will run all day.
If Aurellio displaces him then fine, he is obviously a good player, Riise will still get plenty of games due to his versatility.
I know there are plenty of people that dont rate the lad, but if he was sh!te as Murphy keeps telling us, then the defence wouldnt of broken so many records last season. It was no coincidence that when Traore replaced Riise we started conceding goals.
