Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Just a couple of concerns. Our defense seem to be pretty shaky at times when caught on the break. Does not do my confidence any good at all. Our left flank being largely exposed at times with Riise's defensive capabilities slightly questionable. In one occasion, Finnan did not put in a decent challenge, allowing an opposition player to head the ball towards goal. Needless to say, we were helped by the post.

It also remains that our finishing is still rather poor by our high standards.  We should not be playing too many crosses into the box when it was only Bellamy up front. Furthermore, our set-piece approach is very passive to say the least. Many times we could have swung a free kick/corner in, but decided to do it short, wasting a perfect opportunity at goal. It really did surprise me when we chose to do it short for the very last corner in the 93rd minute.

Still confident that we can get a positive result in the away leg. Another 2-1 win. Bring on the group stages.  :)

Garcia should have started... come on... we'r playing 5 midfielders, 1 striker and Garcia doesnt start ?!
???
He ran that Maccabi defense ragged though... should give rafa something to think about over the weekend !
If we r ever to play a single striker again...i'd wanna see garcia in there playing behind him !
Rafa's bad here !

One quick note, the referee is fucking twat. He denied us of a clear fcuking penalty that even Stevie Wonder would had given.

The luis one? Not sure about that... i thought it was a definite one at first but after seeing the replay garcia does  seem to jump a bit, doesnt seem to get touched much at all and makes it a bit dramatic, im not sure on that one

Rafa`s face was thunder at the end, not a bad game really considering it is still our pre-season, in 2 weeks time with more games behind us and haifa havnt to bring the game to us i dont see any problems.

I thought Riise (apart from his shot) and Finnan were poor, but as you say we got the win which was the most important thing, I just hope the Hafia goal doesn't cost us.

w00t!! I'm sitting here in a pub in Alaro "Mallorca" Spain updating this thread through the whole game. Didn't get to watch the game but from what I have read we played like :censored:. Great that Pennant, Bellamy and Speedy got some love tonight. :D

Not too disappointed with the performance. A lot of huge positives, but a bigger cushion going into the second leg would've been nice.

Pennant and Bellamy were definite positives. Pennant in particular showed exactly what we've missed out on the right by not having a natural winger. Some great skill, and his crossing was good and dangerous. Obviously Gonzalez's goal should do bucketloads for his confidence, which is great. Finnan looks like he's going to have a lot of joy overlapping on the right wing as well.

Sissoko was immense, and even looks as if he's stepped up a level with his passing game. Classy cameo from Garcia, typical spraying passing from Alonso, and good solid work from Reina when needed.

Negatives:

Defensively we still looked a little bit in pre-season mode, which I don't think we should be too worried about. Riise had a generally poor match, which he'll have to address as Aurelio becomes available.

Gerrard looks short of fitness. He had a sprightly spell second half, but generally looked well off the pace.

Zenden doesn't look like any kind of solution for the left, and unless injuries really stack up in the middle, I can't see him making too many appearances this season.

And finally, 4-5-1 just doesn't look like it'll work for us, unless we play much higher up the pitch. We could have the best crossers in the world, but if a team that aren't wonderful at the back like Haifi can afford to put 3 men on your sole striker and have enough time and space to deal with all that comes into the box, you do have to question the logic.

If this had been a meaningless friendly, I'd have been delighted. As it stands, in an important two-legged tie, we've left ourselves a bit more to do, which is a bit disappointing. All that said, first half we saw that Maccabi Haifa are no mugs, and they deserve a lot of respect for keeping the scoreline so close given the problems in their homeland.

Disappointing on the whole for me, however I thought pennant was exceptional.

It wasn't given because Luis decided to do a bit of acting as he went down.

Not quite the result we wanted/expected but two weeks down the line we'll be sharper and Maccabi won't play with ten men behind the ball .

No danger , we'll go through .   :nod  :nod  :nod :D

I don't see any problems if Gonzalez keeps scoring goals every 5 minutes   :)

Pennant played well got a lot of crosses in, but his crosses are so flat. He never puts any curl on them so they are easy to defend against. Having said that if Crouch would head the ball instead of letting it bounce off his head he could have had a couple. Momo was my M.O.M. again.

In the end it should be enough. Can't see us losing by any score in the return.
