The new manager should get 10m only?
We have always backed managers to the hilt which has been depressingly proved with houllier.
The new man should and will receive as much cash as can be made available.
IMO we could win the league in the next 2 seasons with MON or Benitez.
Arsenal have been like a machine this season but still have a very weak link with the madman keeper and will be exploited alot more next season.
Chelsea look like they will be going another huge spending spree in the summer and who knows what will happen and the scum need many players to challenge.
We need 4 or 5 quality signings as we have the nucleus of a decent squad.
We finished 4th this season and alot of the performances not just the results were totally shocking and with a more adventurous style we would beat way more of the lesser teams.
Because a new manager doesn't know the squad and may want to use a different system.

He has enough there at his disposal with the addition of another striker to finish 4th at least.

He should not be allowed to waste money buying players we don't need. A new manager needs to get to know his team first and needs to get to know what players are class and what ones arent.

For me, Finnan, Riise, Kewell, Cheyrou, Smicer, Pongolle, Le Tallec, Welsh, Traore... are all players who may respond well to a new manager.

One of two of them are capable of reaching another level in there game and this is there chance. The new manager needs to do things his way, but he should be forced to build on the positives Houllier has left (which is alot), he shouldn't be allowed to start from scatch as this will set us even further back and waste the best years of Owen and Gerrards careers.

If he builds on that success we will move forward and be in a great position and we'll get there quicker than starting again.

MoN isn't good enough. Benitez would take time. It not a case of winning the league in the next two years, its about getting to the top and staying there.

So if we have a season of inconsistency and scrape 4th again and go out of the cups early should we sack the new manger?? ???

My two cents:

1. Vast improvement in the league, with 4th place the absolute minimum. I don't expect the new manager to win the league straight away, but we need to be closer to the top three next year.

When I say "closer" I mean that we shouldn't be 30 points off the winners. Instead of this so-called "mini-league" of Chelsea, Arsenal and Man UTD there should be a "mini-league" of four to include Liverpool FC.

When people are taking about the gaps in standard next season between the also rans and the top 4 I would expect people to include us in the same breath as Chelsea, Arsenal and Man UTD.

4th place is the absolute minimum, but I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if we finished 4th so long as we gave the three ahead of us a decent run for their money.

2. Obviously get through the Champions League qualifiers.

3. Getting to the 2nd round of the Champions League. If not a decent run in the UEFA Cup after being eliminated from the 1st round of the Champions League. However, despite our weaknesses, we are capable of making at least the second round of the CL.

4. A better home record: we need to cut down on 0-0 draws and 0-1 defeats to the likes of Charlton.

5. More goals from midfielders and our second striker.

6. New signings who actually work out.

7. Re-unite the fans and get them back behind the team.

Most importantly of all, when the season ends, we must be able to look back on it and say "We are making real progress".

A lot depends on who the new manager is as to how much we can hope for. I think fifth has to be a minimum target, CL the first season aim. I'd give whoever is in charge at least three seasons to get us into a position to challenge for the title, the one thing Houllier never managed. I guess now all "standards" have been set by Houllier, the "standards" by which we will judge the next manager - five year plan et al :O

1  Don't lose to teams we should beat.
2  Make Anfield a fortress again.
3  Get rid of at least 6 players and bring in at least 3 world class players.
4  Don't finish any lower than 4th.
5  No time bound plans.
6  Close the gap on the top 3.

You can add - stop keep drawing games and at least once in a while manage to turn round a half-time deficit (we are still in the haven't turned round a half-time deficit since 1999 run - right?)
