Marco Materazzi has admitted he insulted Zinedine Zidane prior to the head-butt which earned the Frenchman a red card in Sunday's World Cup final.

Zidane lost his cool during extra-time in Berlin and charged at Italy defender Materazzi, butting him in the chest.

Theories have abounded as to what Materazzi might have said to provoke such a response and the former Everton defender concedes he did make an offensive remark.

Materazzi, 32, told Gazetta dello Sport: 'I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering.

'He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, `If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true.'

Materazzi has not elaborated on what he did say, but one report suggested he responded with: `I'd rather take the shirt off your wife'.

He has denied, however, some of the more vile insults referring to his wife or sister or calling him a terrorist.

'It was one of those insults you're told dozens of times and that you often let fall on a pitch,' Materazzi said.

'I did not call him a terrorist. I am not a cultured person and I don't even know what as Islamist terrorist is.'

He added: 'For me the mother is sacred, you know that.'

The incident marked an unsavoury end to Zidane's career, especially as France went on to lose the match on penalties. The 34-year-old had said he would retire after the tournament.

Zidane himself is yet to speak on the incident but his agent yesterday claimed the reaction was due to a 'very serious' comment.

Suggestions that Materazzi's remarks may have been vile or racist in nature have raised the issue of whether he should face some sort of retrospective action himself.

Tournament organisers FIFA have given no indication they might pursue such a line but English referees chief Keith Hackett sees no reason why such a principle should not be established.

Hackett told BBC Radio Five Live: 'They are reluctant to take action after the game but here is a situation where, if there is proof, for the good of the game, action should be taken.

'I am pleased the Football Association, in May, wrote a circular to all clubs, through the PFA and LMA, reminding everyone that racist remarks constitute a sending-off offence.'

"I did not call him a terrorist. I am NOT A CULTURED PERSON and I don't even know what an Islamist terrorist is."

Shows how much of an idiot he really is.

Exactly. As if you need to be cultured to know what a terrorist is. The local scumbag down at the off-licence knows what a terrorist is, and you cna't tell me he's "cultured".

I seriously doubt he used "one of those insults you're told dozens of times and that you often let fall on a pitch". Zidane wouldn't have reacted like that unless it was either family or race related IMO.

Zidane will be speaking about the incident on Canal + (French TV network) tonight apparently. His agent has said it was a "very serious" comment, so it will be very interesting to see what Zizou has to say, especially as he's retired now and has nothing to worry about in terms of disciplinary action.

good point.  They're all as bad as the next...yet during the 80's and 90's....calling Irish opposition players "stupid f**king paddys" or "IRA rejects" was ok?  I'm not irish and i'm not condoning what happened to ZZ....but its been in the game for decades and at the age of 34, he shouldn't have reacted the way he did.

It might not have been racial? It may have been nothing, but then again it could have been a derogatory comment about his family (I believe his mother is in hospital at the moment).

I know a lot of people who would react the same way if you said something very offensive about their mother, just look at Lee J 's comments at Roberts for example, completely unnecessary and Roberts was very annoyed at them and rightly so.

Materazzi may have said nothing, but for Zidane to react like that it surely would have taken something pretty serious.

Zidane: Materazzi insulted my mother and sister

Zinedine Zidane has publicly apologised for his sending-off in the World Cup final, but claimed he did not regret his actions against Marco Materazzi.

Zidane, who was captaining his country in his final match before retirement, stated that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister in the seconds leading up to the incident, which saw the France midfielder thrust his head into the Italy defender's chest.

'I reacted badly and I would like to apologise for it,' Zidane told Canal Plus. 'I would like to apologise because a lot of children were watching the match. I do apologise but I don't regret my behaviour because regretting it would mean he was right to say what he said.

'There was no tension with Materazzi before or during the match.

'He just put his hand onto my shirt and I told him to stop. I told him that if he wanted it I could give it to him at the end of the match.

'Then he said very harsh words to me and repeated them several times. I left but then I went back towards him and things went very fast. The words he said concerned my mother and sister.

'I heard them once, then twice, and the third time I couldn't control myself. I am a man and some words are harder to hear than actions. I would have rather been knocked down than hear that.'

'Afterwards I explained to the referee that I had been provoked, but my behaviour is not forgivable,' Zidane said.

Without Zidane, who had earlier given France the lead with a penalty, extra-time finished with the score locked at 1-1, and Zidane's team lost the penalty shoot-out 5-3 to Italy.

Asked whether he plans to attend FIFA hearings into the incident, Zidane said that he would seek to defend himself.

'I will go and I will tell everything I have just said,' he added. 'The reaction is always punished but if there is no provocation there is no reaction. The guilty person is the one who provokes.

'If I reacted that way, it is because something bad happened. Do you really believe that 10 minutes before the end of my career I would be able to make such a bad gesture? The provocation was very serious.'

The incident was a sad way to end what has been a glittering career for Zidane, but he insisted he would not change his mind about retiring.

'This is a decision I have made and I will not go back on it,' he said. 'This is definite. I will not play again.'

Materazzi himself, who scored the equaliser for Italy on Sunday, made a statement of his own while Zidane was speaking on French television.

'I didn't mention anything about religion, politics or racism,' he said. 'I didn't insult his mother. I lost my mother when I was 15 years old and still get emotional when I talk about it.

'Naturally, I didn't know that his mother was in hospital but I wish her all the best.

'Zidane is my hero and I have always admired him a lot.'

"very offensive, very personal. It affects my mother, my sister. These are very hard words. So you hear it once and then you try to walk away, and I do walk away. Then he repeats that for a second time. And the third time, well, I'm a human being.

There are some words sometimes, which can be harder than ... Well, I'd rather have received a right-hand punch in the gob rather than hear that."

Seems to me that Zidane reacted like a lot of others would.

IN my local league people would say all sorts in the first 10 minutes of a game to see if the guy they were marking had a cool head or was mentally weak. I was a bit of a Franz Beckanbaur so I didn't have to  :D

"I shagged your mother last night" is the type of thing a 10 year old would say.

Zidane felt good for about one second for hitting the Italian but he'd feel a lot better if had a winners medal. If I was Italian I'd  be delighted at Materazzis actions.

All the pathetic people in the media who said it was a "terrorist" comment really showed up their own racism.
