That'll leave room for 3 in the middle and stevie can slot in behind the 2 strikers.

                         Reina

         Carrager   Hyypia   Palleta/Agger
Alves                                                Aurelio

                Momo   StevieG   Xabi

            Crouch/Robbie    Bellamy

That looks good enough for me

yeah i like this but where does speedy fit in to it though?

Interesting formation that worked for us very well in a match last season. If (hopefully not) Kewell leaves, this formation could be used with gonzales coming off the bench for one of the centre backs

That looks a very strong exciting formation (Gonzales has played wingback so could also be used) The only problems would be a lack of cover in midfield (if Hamann does go) a lack of cover for the right side(if Alves were injured suspended etc.) and a lack of a second targetman. Things are starting to look really good for next season now. A couple of quality signings and I think we have a real chance of EPL title. I would really like Rafa to use that formation in a lot of games next season.

Yeah that's my worry too if we decide to use this formation.... cover in central midfield.... Finnan, Riise, Gonzalez, Krompkamp can all be used for cover in the wingbacks position or even revert back to a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 should injuries become a factor.

We need a Yahaya Toure to beef up the midifield strength....
Wishful thinking I know...  :D

But the formation relies a lot on us Alves and Aurelio..... without quality wing-backs, it'll all fall down like a house of cards around our ears..

There was a really good thread on this towards the back-end of last season but i can't seem to find it. Unfortunately just about everything i had to say about was in there!

I like Stevie playing from right-mid and hope he sees plnty of time there again next season.

How can you leave Steve Finnan out? He along with Carragher has been very consistant over the past two seasons.

I rate Finnan very highly in a 4-4-2 formation. Its just that I don't think he'll be as effective as a wingback. IMO this formation has a pre-requisite for the wing-backs to be extremely fit, fast and with an ability on the ball that would have to come close to matching the modern winger.

Qualities which I feel Finnan does not have 'nuff of.

In a conventional back four, he's great but will get shown up by pacy wingers.

I've been saying for a while that I think Rafa will play a 3-5-2 type formation. That team just about satisfies that theory.
