Best team or best results ?

The Premiership - General Discussion

I've just been having a lenghty debate with an Arsenal fan, my old man.
The debate started out with me saying
" The best teams dont often win knockout tournaments"

This could be argued too that your the best team if you win a football tournament. I dont think its true as its a one off game and its about being better on the day. Wrexham knocked Arsenal out of the F.A cup a few years back and bigger clubs can often get scalped.

He agreed but then went on to say the same thing can be said about the league. No no I said, over the course of 38 games whoever finishes on top of the league is the best team throughout the season.
My Dad wouldnt have any of it, personally and I told him its because he's bitter about Chelsea he always gose on about there money. And that they play :censored: and win games, the way he sees it is that the winners of the league, namely Chelsea get THE BEST RESULTS but are not the best team. He reckons the better side are the side who plays the better football, but still finishes fith. He said and admitted to prove his point Spurs were a better team than Arsenal last year even though they eventually finished below them. Because they played better football, he thinks Chelsea got the best results but arent the best team in the league.
Now as much as I cant stand Chelsea I have to disagree, if you finish top at the end of a league campaign, you are the best team IMO even if you do win ugly , grind out results and get a few lucky ones on the way.
I even asked him about the old boring boring Arsenal he still kept his opinion, whats that of yours.

Chelsea were the better team, but Arsenal were more attractive.

Simple as that.

Liverpool were the best and most attractive team in 1989,yet still lost to a poor Arsenal outfit.

I agree with your old man.

Good defensive teams usually do better in cups, good well balanced teams in the league. This is because in the league you can afford the odd freak/bad result and still win the title. Obviously one bad result and your out of the cup. In the league you have to play all the other teams twice which should give some advantage to, and a fair reflection of the better team. In the cup if you get the luck of the draw you can play lower division teams all the way to the final.
I think you are right that the best TEAM wins the league but not necessarily the team that plays the best football. Liverpool would have won the league last season IF the season had started in October. Which means Chelsea were only the best team for 3 months yet they won the league. Spurs were probably a better team than Arsenal for most of the season but finished below them.
The league is 38 matches and the best team over the whole season wins. I would like Liverpool to play glorious attacking football all season and win the league in grand style, but if we have to play ugly and grind out results to win the title I will be just as happy.
