Next season - What's the minimum requirement?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Judging by Rick PArrys comments after houlliers demise..

"will we be challenging for the league next year without a change, the answer is NO!"

That to me suggests we must be a lot closer to arsenal chelsea and the scum next year. my targets would be:

1. 6 points max from top spot. (not 30)
2. Quarters of the champions league minimum.
3. Not lose a home game all season, play attractive football.
4. WIn an Fa cup possibly
5. 3rd place or above.
6. At least 40 points above Everton (not difficult)
7. Show little interest in the Ueafa/ Worthless cup.
8. Cane Man Utd Home and Away.

We need obviously a few decent players to achieve this, and given the right appointment, and the proposed investment and available funds into the club then it could be possible, it just depends who you give the cheque book to.

Right ok.

You wonder why i think you're such an idiot. You expect us to acheive something we haven't acheived in 14 years (finishing within 6 points of the league title), reach the quarter finals of the champions league, not lose a home game all season, play pretty and be all wimpy in the tackles and not battle and batter the best side of the 90's home and away, also you expect us to finish above at least one of united, chelsea and arsenal next season?

Arsenal haven't lost in the league and the others have immense spending power and you expect a new manager to just know what players he wants and know his system at the click of a hat without any sort of settling in period and then do all of the above?

You're having a laugh aren't you?

i'd say one or two of those maybe a target for us the sesaon after next if all goes well, but next season? Jesus christ... get a grip!!

Cisse and Drogba are both foreigners.

Foreigners are not necessarily the answer, Joe Cole would be a good signing. I'm just thinking the quality of player we need who are english would not sign for us.
Beckham, Campbell, Ferdinand, Lampard etc would not sign for us at the minute, so we have to look overseas. Depending on who the manager is, will dpend on who we sign. Curbishley would probably stick with english players or players in the Premier League.

I've said it b4, i would like Mourinho here, he has transformed Porto into a top side in Europe and thats what needs to be done here. Hopefully he would bring players like Deco with him, cos you can't deny the guy is class.

Listening to some peoples expectations for next season in this post is about as far fetched as i think I have ever read. :p

What makes you think ANYONE can overtake the Top 3 in his first season ? This is the PREM not the Scottish Premier !!!!

Realistically, what we aready achieved under GH , that is to say qualification for the CL and to push Man u and Chelsea a little harder instead of being pushed by the likes Of Brum, Charlton and Fulham might be a fair expectation. !!!!!

Houlliers record in Europe is going to be very hard to match never mind beat (7 defeats in 50 , One European Final and a Quarter Final in last 3 seasons) ,

His 2 Worthington Cups in 3 seasons and 1 Fa Cup plus 1 Super Cup and A Charity Shield over that time wil be a piece of ****** for any manager to emulate , yeah course it will ???

The  ONLY cup worth talking about is the League Championship and the consistency required to win that will most likely take a few years to get together.
Under Houllier it would never have happened, there would always have been an injury,a poor ref,bad weather, too many games, alien abduction, the Bermuda Triangle or whatever ridiculous excuse he could think of instead of his inane tactics and mystifying team selections.

A good cup run, good results in certain games.

Thats realistic.

The new manager should get about 10million for a striker and thats all he should recieve.

Next season he should be made to learn about his team and the players before he starts to introduce his system. We have to build on what we have. Not start from scratch.

Agree, but I think the Cissé transfer should be able to go ahead.

The new manager should get 10m only? ???
We have always backed managers to the hilt which has been depressingly proved with houllier.
The new man should and will receive as much cash as can be made available.
IMO we could win the league in the next 2 seasons with MON or Benitez.
Arsenal have been like a machine this season but still have a very weak link with the madman keeper and will be exploited alot more next season.
Chelsea look like they will be going another huge spending spree in the summer and who knows what will happen and the scum need many players to challenge.
We need 4 or 5 quality signings as we have the nucleus of a decent squad.
We finished 4th this season and alot of the performances not just the results were totally shocking and with a more adventurous style we would beat way more of the lesser teams.
Smith to Shankly:My thigh is a bit sore, but I think I could play.
Shankly to Fagan:Tell him,Joe.He has got no chance of playing.
Smith to Fagan:Tell him to sod off.It is not his leg,it's mine.
Shankly to Smith:Oh no son.You are wrong, son. It is not your leg.
It is Liverpool Football Club's leg.

Liverpool face a summer that will shape their entire future after manager Gerard Houllier was reluctantly eased out of Anfield.

Chief executive Rick Parry revealed the decision to make a change at the top hinged on one single issue - would Liverpool be serious title contenders next season?

And once the answer came up in the negative, Houllier's six-year reign was over.

But relieving Houllier of his duties may be the easy part when it comes to putting together the formula for success Parry and the Liverpool board demand.

Liverpool now have to identify the type of man who can re-ignite the glory days, and then provide the sort of financial firepower that would seriously threaten the current supremacy of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

This, we can safely assume, will be the difficult part.

Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez may fall into the flavour of the month category with the cynics, while even Alan Curbishley would admit managing Charlton is a different affair from managing Liverpool.

Whoever takes the job, we must assume from Parry's words that only the title will do because Houllier has won everything else at domestic level, with the occasional Uefa Cup thrown in.

The task is a massive one.

Arsenal are peerless and will strengthen, while it is certain the chequebook will be in regular use at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford.

Roman Abramovich will bankroll another blockbuster summer at Chelsea, with an ironic twist that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard might be a prime target.

And ominous noises are emerging from Old Trafford that Sir Alex Ferguson will embark on a major spree to ease the pain of a season without the title.

This means Liverpool will have to run quickly simply to stand still in a Premiership where the power of the pound will be demonstrated again this summer.

The new man must not only acquire the calibre of player needed to bridge the increasing gap between Liverpool and the top three, but thin out a squad top heavy with the under-achievers who ultimately played a key role in Houllier's demise.

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen's thinking on this summer is clear - the club must get it right or risk watching the teams they hope to eclipse escape forever.

Owen must be persuaded to sign new deal

Houllier has put solid foundations in place with Liverpool's academy and the opulent Melwood training headquarters which ranks alongside any in the world.

And in Gerrard and Michael Owen, Houllier's successor will inherit two world-class talents.

The next man in charge must try to seal the deal on Owen's new contract, while at the same time making the moves that will impress Gerrard and keep him from Abramovich's clutches.

Djibril Cisse is arriving in a £14m deal from Auxerre - what will the new incumbent make of effectively being presented with the club's record signing?

How easy will it be to move on men such as El-Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao, Igor Biscan and Bruno Cheyrou?

This is why Liverpool's board, despite insisting the search for the man to follow Houllier began in earnest on Monday, will have surely formulated an indentikit of their new manager.

It is a dream job by anyone's standards - but it will need some quick impact actions to ensure it does not become the impossible one.

And they have no time to waste. Houllier's replacement will have already been earmarked in the Anfield corridors of power.

Cheescakery and a mate are playing football on a park in London. Suddenly a dog appears and sinks its teeth into the younger boy's chest. Cheescakery picks up stick and drives it through the dog's heart, killing it.
A reporter observes all of this and asks cheescakery if he can write a story on it. He takes out a notebook and puts down the title
"ARSENAL FAN SAVES FRIEND'S LIFE"
Cheesecakery says "I don't support Arsenal". so the reporter puts down
"CHELSEA FAN SAVES FRIEND'S LIFE"
Cheescackery says "I don't support Chelsea",so the reporter asks "Who do you support?", and cheesecakery replies "Man U". So, the reporter writes down
"GLORY HUNTING TO$$ER KILLS FAMILY PET"

i know what he means but really attractive football means attacking football, get at times at home and play our strengths away from home, that way we can maybe challenge for the title depending on who we bring in, its just a case of waiting adn seeing and enjoying that we have a new start

houllier couldn't of turned it around he had his chance so im hoping tis either porto manager or martin o'neill, they are proven

Some exciting attacking football, a top three finish (without sweating the last few weeks) and a decent run in europe (quarterfinals  ) will do for me.
Oh, and most importantly Liverpool start to win back some respect no more 2nd rate teams coming to our place and taking the p*ss and points.
