I actually think Rooney is the one who isn't world class (yet perhaps).

And no I'm not talking about his temperament. Its just his abilities. Its just that he's a young English prodigy that's why his reputation is so hyped up. Don't get me wrong though, he's a great player, but not world class yet.

Compare R.Baggio and Rooney. Who's world class?

Then compare Ronaldinho and Rooney. Both play in relatively similar positions but who would you take in your team?

But he sure has time on his side.

SG on the other hand, is definitely world class and I'm not saying that just because I'm a Liverpool fan. Can tackle, can shoot. Can head, can score with left and right. All with good, consistent precision. WTF more do they want? Score from a GOAL KICK?

Rooney is definately world class and thats already.
He is exceptional at almost everything, heading probably being his weakest area.
He wasnt really fit in this world cup and was played in the big games as a lone striker which is not his game.
If you watch a fit Rooney he is the best player on the pitch virtually every time he plays.
Strong, fast great shot ability to spot a pass and then to put the correct weight on it. He can dribble tackle and score from distance.
Rooney is already one of the worlds best and will get even better.

To say that Lampard and Gerrard are not world class but are made to look so in the premiership due to being surrounded by technically superior foreign players may be true of the former, but correct me if I'm wrong but up until Benitez started bringing in quality players, it was Gerrard who carried a team of 'technically superior foreigners' in most premiership games.  This writer's refusal to place Gerrard on a higher level than Lampard highlights either his ignorance and poor understanding of the game or his bias.  Probably both I suspect.

At the end of the day he can dig as deep as he wants to look for the 'root of the problem' as far as England is concerned, but a simple change in management, captain and tinkering with the current personnel will make a hell of a difference to the England side

Absolutely spot on post.  I can't see this Steve McLaren being the answer though.

Chris Waddle has also voiced concern over the lack of skillful players from England, I think looking at the current grassroots side would help but at the same time, that squad that got knocked out the other day had the potential and the drive, so it can't be that bad.

When Owen was 19 he was considered by most to be World class with his pace and scoring abilities. But now he's nowhere near his best due to whatever reasons. For me though its the opposite with Rooney, I personally think he is slightly over hyped and overated. People claim him to be world class, but for me Rooney has all the abilities to push on and become world class. Whether he will or not is another matter. Compared to someone like Messi Rooney, IMHO isnt as good.
Gerrard though is what 26 or something he has been proving year in year out what a fantastic player he is especially for Liverpool. So for me out of the two Gerrard would be deemed world class not Rooney.

Maybe it's me, but surely anyone who thinks that Shearer, Pearce, Linacre, Adams, Bryan Robson, John Barnes, etc weren't World Class, needs shooting in the head?

By definition, "World-CLass" means they are good enough to occupy their position above all others, or at least be second choice.

So in their time, the above-named players wouldn't have managed that?

Whoever wrote that artical is seriously lacking in brains.

The fact of the matter is this:

Steven Gerrard would walk into any club side in the World. He is the best player in his position of his generation.

No other midfielder offers what he does to a team. He excells at everything, save for controlling tempo.

Anyone who truely believes he is not among the best 4 midfielders on Planet Earth needs a good hiding.

Simple as that.

C The writer is a C U N T for insinuating that in the first place..........he can say anything he wants about all the England players I really dont care (cos im Scottish) but to slag off Gerrard and say he is not World class begs beleif I mean I am not just saying this cos I am an LFC fan but Liverpool and England have the best all round midfielder in the WORLD at present in Gerrard!!!

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are very good players but they are not world class. They are able to play well in the Premiership because they are surrounded by top-quality foreign players who are technically and tactically superior to their English counterparts.

smartazz

ronaldinho is not a world class player, he couldn't lead his team mates to the WC final, and is surrounded by top-quality foreign players who are technically and tactically superior to their spanish counterparts in barca

henry is not a world class player, he couldn't lead his team mates to lift any international cup this century, and is surrounded by top-quality foreign players who are technically and tactically superior to their English counterparts.

shevchenko is not a world class player, he couldn't lead his team mates to the WC final, and is surrounded by top-quality foreign players who are technically and tactically superior to their Italian counterparts

etc. etc

then who on earth is if based on such definition???
