MARK GONZALEZ WORK PERMIT ACCEPTED - welcome to liverpool

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

But at the end of the day, if we can get money for Harry, that finances the sale of quality in other areas that we need to succeed this year i.e. upfront and right wing.

In my eyes Kewell will still demand transfer fees equivalent to what we paid for him, I would imagine he is also nearing the end of his existing contract.

There is a viciuos rumour (and nothing more) that Kewell has a term in his contract that he must play in any final the club get to (think about it) and if that is the case then I can't see Rafa sticking with him.

it's not being fickle, it's just being logical. as rafa has already proven during his time here there's no room for sentiment.

personally, id sell kewell if we got a decent offer for him.

...of course it's being fickle. Kewell ended the season really well with us and most people were singing his praises that he was finally showing some form and staying injury free. Now that someone else has come along people are turning against him. At least give him a chance, if he reverts to playing :censored: then fine (and we can all be fickle together) but if he doesn't then he deserves to be in the team as he did last season!!

What would you call a decent offer? Personally i doubt we'll get another player close to his class for less than 6m so it'd need to be near that. We don't even know if Gonzales will click straight away in the EPL ( :D ) so i'd rather have Kewell on the bench than Zenden/Riise.

I agree everyone on here is raving about Gonzalez and whilst he's look impressive with Chile & Sociedad, that doesn't mean he will be successful here, granted that I think he will but you just never know in football. When Kewell is on form and not injured he's easily one of our best players. He's showed against Chelsea and Tottenham as well as Everton that he'sa  great player. And sure he might not be the player he once was but that happens in football. After all Fowler's not the player he once was, yet he's still putting goals in for one. Every team needs a scapegoat and sadly it's Kewell. I genuinely believe he's injured when he has to go off and if he was pretending the medical staff would pick up on it.

I'd accept and offer for Kewell for £8million, I would stick my two fingers up at a club who offered less than £6million for him.

Djimi is off to whoever will take him and Warnock will probably be off but Zenden can move infield to provide cover for the central midfield positions.

But will Zenden want to be a bit part player, that's what you have to ask yourself. I don't think he will.

If he doesn't want to be a bit-part player, he'll have to raise his game.

This is why we need competition for places.

Exactly, its not the case that this signing means someone is heading out the door. It now means that there is genuine competition for places.

Easier said than done, some players show 100% effort on the pitch and in training and yet hardly start. If you're not in the managers plan than no matter how well you play, how much commitment you show and how well do you in training..you simply won't play. We have far too many left sided players, granted Riise can play LB and LM, I still think we have far too many.

I can see the arguments for keeping Kewell but also the ones for selling him.

pros - we need competition in all positions, Kewell was our best attacking player bar Gerrard since xmas, Gonzalez might need time to adapt, it is a long season with many games and Kewell is bound to be needed at some point even if Gonzalez is a huge hit, I doubt we'd get more than about 3 million for Kewell anyway..

cons - too injury prone, Gonzalez will be first choice and Kewell is a sellable asset, we have other players like Riise who can act as backup to Gonzalez, getting Kewell off the wage bill even for a reduced fee would allow us to bring in other players.

I don't think it's a clear cut decision to be honest.  Personally I'm a Kewell fan, I'd keep him, but I'd understand if Benitez wanted to sell him.  However I also think Benitez is a big Kewell fan and will persevere with him at least for another season.  I doubt a clause in Kewell's contract saying he has to play in finals exists, but the fact Benitez has started him now in 3 finals would suggest he trusts him.  Maybe with Gonzalez in the squad there won't be so much pressure on Kewell to play every week and we can be more careful with him in terms of him picking up knocks.  Who knows, we might see the best of Kewell if he was to play, say, every other week, giving his body time to recover properly between games.

Rafa was made up with the way the new scouting staff in South America managed to get the deals for Gonzalez Aurella & Paletta up and running. read he is looking for more of the same from the other scouting areas.

I am absolutely delighted! :D
He is young, fast and talented.
Do any of you think Kewell can get through a season without a serious injury that rocks the "balance" of our team?
Gonzalez...time to prove Rafa's faith in you! :;):

Yes definatley. He seems like a real breath of fresh air and will really push the like of Risse (and Kewell is he sticks around) to perform.

Hes trained quitea bit now with the team (i think he trained with them for a few weeks before his loan move to Sociedad) so I hope he adjusts well.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.
