Kewell recovery

Maybe we'll see the lad against Japan on 12th June. I just hope he isn't rushed back into the squad too soon.

bit more good news lionheart?

Kewell makes Australia comeback

Kewell's return was an unexpected bonus
Liverpool's Harry Kewell scored twice and set up two goals on his unexpected return to action for Australia in a World Cup practice match.
The winger had his first outing since injuring a groin in the FA Cup final on 13 May as the Socceroos beat Dutch amateur side VV Kloetinge 8-1.

Kewell, 26, played for 85 minutes after he persuaded Australia coach Guus Hiddink to let him take part.

"We were not going to play him," revealed assistant coach Graham Arnold.

"But we got an 85-minute bonus. At half-time he felt good and didn't want to come off."

Kewell is likely to be rested when the Socceroos take on Holland in Rotterdam on Sunday but is expected to return for Australia's final warm-up match against Liechtenstein in Ulm on Wednesday.

What's the score with Kewell now?  Has he torn his groin, got gout or an infected blister?

Does anyone know?  Does Kewell know?
???

I'm sure he'll be ready for the start of the season.  Maybe he'll get injured during the Charity Shield.

Gout (also called gouty arthritis, Greek name: podagra, from pod - foot and agra - trap) is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The term “gout” comes from the Latin word “gutta” meaning “a drop” from the belief that gout was caused by drops of morbid humors and may be related to the large lumps of urate deposits.

what is gout?

Gout is a systemic disease (i.e., condition that occurs throughout the body) caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints. An elevated blood level of uric acid (called hyperuricemia) occurs when the liver produces more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine, or when a diet high in rich foods (e.g., red meat, cream sauces, red wine) produces more uric acid than the kidneys can filter from the blood.

Over time, uric acid in the blood crystallizes and settles in the joint spaces, causing swelling, inflammation, stiffness, and pain. Gout usually affects the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of the big toe (hallux) or the ankle joints.

:D

Gout is traditionally seen as a disease of the rich. It looks like Harry has been having a bit too much of the good life  :D

It is very easily treated and, although very sore at the time, clears up very quickly with the right treatment. Kewell is young to get gout though!!!

Age is generally not a factor. Mid-late 20's is not unheard of. It can manifest in a number of joints not just the great toe (e.g. ankles, elbow joints). It doesn't just 'clear up'...it is generally a chronic condition. The first step to managing, not curing, the disease is an adjustment in diet. Very little seafood, especially shellfish, should be consumed. The same with read meat, rich foods, alcohol, wholemeal & lugumes. You should also drink plenty of fresh water >2L per day.

If diet cannot manage the condition medication (allopurinol) should be prescribed as urate crystal can cause renal (kidney) failure. A number of blood test sould be conducted to ascertain the urate levels in blood.

During the acute phase of this disease it is EXCRUCIATINGLY painful. Did you notice Harry on crutches at the Italy match?? He would have been unable to weightbare or put the limb to the ground.

Once the disease is under control and well managed he should be able to play without too many problems but it can flare up from time to time.

How do I know this?? I've had gout for a number of years now . It's a bloody painful thing but it doesn't interfere too much with my life. But I have to be careful with diet, etc.

Cheers lads       :D
