In the context of this season, I saw Robbie Fowler's first goal on his return to Liverpool, and he celebrated right in front of me which was good of him

I despair I REALLY do...............
I reckon the opening game of one of only two international football tournaments ever to be staged in my country is a significant event. It would have been more significant if we'd have won it, but that's how the cookie crumbles.
What's up anyway Leon? After all the training you've given me, all that you, in your wisdom, you've taught me I've let you down? Please, I'm begging you to teach me more! Your camp comments hurt like a dagger through my heart. I can't express how upset I am that I've disappointed you. The thought that I've made you lose all hope is just too much to take. I'm going to end it all...right now!

I mean that in the last five to six years I have been to Dortmund, Istanbul, Cardiff a few times, Monaco and Anfield on some amazing European nights and you are on here trying to tell me that the sunny afternoon that you spent in a bombed out pi.ss stinking stadium with a load of southern shandy supping ponces with no ambition for their home town teams singing commercialised remakes of old old old cra.ppy songs was what your going to tell your kids about AND you claim to be a Liverpool fan.
This, this is why I despair !
So you're suggesting I should tell my kids about YOUR experiences, as they're so much better than mine? The thread is about relating personal experiences. My best experience was probably supporting England in a major international event, that doesn't actually mean that I can't call myself a Liverpool fan.
I was a Liverpool fan before you were born Leon, but if it makes you happy to go on a forum and boast about how you're a better Liverpool fan than someone else, go ahead. It doesn't make any difference to me one way or another.
Maybe you read it wrong, but I meant that if I have been lucky enough to witness all those amazing games, and experienced those atmospheres then surely as a red who has been "going the game since before I was born" (which for the record co-incided with our first European Cup win) YOU must have more to tell your son than "I went to an England game in 1996 at Wembley and it stunk of rat pi.ss" ?

We've all got different circumstances. I couldn't afford to go to games as a kid, and my parents didn't think it was safe either as football violence was taking off in a big way. I met my wife when I was only 17 and she's not really into football. Now I've got a daughter who isn't into it at all. My spending money goes on trips abroad with them, rather than to football matches just for me because that's how I choose to set my priorities.
I haven't been "going the game since before you were born", that's a mis-quote. I've been supporting Liverpool since then, but I've never been to see them abroad.
So, in conclusion, my best football experience that'll I'll tell my son about (if I have one) is the opening game of Euro '96.

Anfield is renown for its "Special European nights" but this really was something special. The gates were locked an hour before kick off and the Kop was in full voice for the visit of the French Champions, the previous years beaten finalists.Trailing one nil from the first leg we knew we had a game on our hands.
Kevin Keegan opened the scoring after 2mins with a scrappy goal to send the place wild I had never experienced anything like it.The French wernt done with though Bathanay equalised and gave them the precious away goal. Those of you at the Chelsea semi final will remember the atmosphere it was very much like that, the exception being the Kop was standing then, it was a heaving mass for 3 hours, singing and swaying.Ray Kennedy put us 2-1 up, level on aggregate but they had the crucial away goal.We were on our way out.Davy Fairclough was brought off the bench and lived up to his title of Supersub by netting the winner.
I have been lucky enough to attend major finals at home and abroad, but this game still holds special memories for me.

Twice I have sat outside Anfield having not been able to get in, the Barcelona game (Cryuff played) and the StEtienne match. The noise was incredible on both occasions but the one home game when I wish I could say "I was there" was the StEtienne game. You Jammy b*stard.
