Liverpool's Houllier-Curbishley plan to cost £2M

May 24, 2004

If Liverpool are to land Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley to replace Gerard Houllier, the entire project will cost the Merseysiders almost £2 million.
As investment talks with the Thai government stall and Djibril Cisse's move from Auxerre likely to cost £14 million, Liverpool will be cutting it fine with the decision to axe Houllier.

The Frenchman will be handed £1 million compensation if he does decide to leave Anfield. Curbishley's buyout clause at Charlton is also worth £900,000.

Its also been suggested that Liverpool will double Curbs' wages, to £2 million-a-year, to bring him to Anfield.

Alan Curbishley

Club              :  Charlton Athletic
Appointed       :  24/ 07/ 1991
Date of Birth   :  08/ 11/ 1957
Previous Clubs :  Portsmouth
Honours         :  - 2000 First Division Champions
                       - 1998 Promotion to Premier League

Former West Ham and Birmingham midfielder Alan Curbishley had two spells at Charlton as a player after initially joining the club from Aston Villa in December 1984. He made 69 appearances, scoring six goals, during a spell when the Addicks reached the old First Division before Lennie Lawrence sold him to Brighton in the summer of 1987. He returned in 1990, accompanying his playing role with the position of reserve-team coach, stepping up to first-team coach when Mike Flanagan was sacked in October that year.

When Lawrence left abruptly for Middlesbrough the following summer, Curbishley was handed the manager's post in conjunction with Steve Gritt. The pair steered the Addicks close to the promotion play-offs, despite being forced to play at Upton Park, while the planned renovation of The Valley continued to drag on due to a crisis in funding.

The team also began the 1992/3 season brightly, but the duo were forced to sell Robert Lee to Newcastle to help balance the books and the side eventually finished in mid-table. Charlton had finally been able to return to their traditional home in December 1992 and continued to out-perform most pundits' expectations until a mediocre 1994/95 campaign and the appointment of Richard Murray as managing director led to the sacking of Gritt in June that year.

Curbishley has since been in sole charge and after suffering disappointment in the play-offs in 1996 he won promotion to the Premiership in 1998 after a thrilling Wembley final in which Charlton came from behind to eventually beat Sunderland on penalties.

A difficult initiation to the Premiership ended in relegation but Curbishley managed to keep all his key players at The Valley and steered The Addicks to the First Division title in style the following year - a feat that earned him the prestigious LMA Manager of the Year award.

His second spell in the top flight has proved to be more successful as Curbs has sought to consolidate the club's position.

Finishing in ninth in 2000/01, an impressive performance in their first season back in the top flight, The Addicks stayed up the following year, coming 14th, and finished 12th in 2002/03, after threatening to challenge for a place in Europe until a disappointing end to the season.

In fact, were it not for their poor form at either end of the season, Charlton would have certainly have been in the top six - a target their usually cautious manager put forward for the following year.

well...more than that anyway.  But lets not start slagging off the new guy before the new guy walks through the door, thats if he does, i.e. Have you heard something definite on Curbishley cos all I've got so far is the official boot for Houllier.  The real skinny is that it's Strachan, a done deal apparently!  Either of those two would do for me  - the right spirit, attitude and ability to get players going.

I can not imagine us signing Curbishley as a manager. That would be a major step backwards. As i see it there are several available candidates with a better track record and a better reputation than Mr. Curbishley. As I have pointed out earlier my top three candidates are:

1. Benitez
2.Hitzfeld
3. Mourihno

These guys have all the right credentials, and will have a lot more pulling power in the transfer market than Curbishley.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

people who say that managers have "no track record" seem to forget that shankly and paisley had no track record when they came to manage liverpool.

I'm not asking for O'Neal, but I wouldn't mind since he has achieved as much as possible at the level he is at.
Of the proposed managers Benitez is my choice.
