ENGLAND VS SWEDEN - Match thread, build up etc

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Postby 66-1112520797 » Tue Jun 20, 2006 8:14 am

Okay guys, we havent beaten the Swedes for 38 years or something like that  :oh:

Will that change tonight ?

I'm on the fence with this one its gonna be close, the Swedes havent really impressed me TBH, Ibrahimovich has been slack for them. But with Larsson and Ljundberg in the team they still carry a goal threat even if they havent set the WC alight.

England on the other hand seem to look as though there going to offer Hargreaves a rare start. Coming in for Gerrard, but for good reason really I wouldnt want to run the risk of losing him in the next round. England though might perform  by playing against a better side . I dont know your thoughts please ?

C'mon England  :buttrock

Sweden are just a decent well organised team that we should beat easily. England can only get better and will hopefully start to show their class today. 2-0 england :D

a draw suits both teams just fine.

it's got a 1-1 draw written all over it.

I can't see England winning. All hype, very little quality in my opinion.

The teams are pretty close on paper, England shade it just. As St Michael said... 1-1 all over it.

I actually think England will win tonight.  They have been poor so far but so have Sweden, and even if neither are playing well as a team, England have more individual talent that will see them win 1-0 imo.  Sven might actually show a bit of passion for once too, as he's apparently wanting to get a win over Sweden as he's failed the last couple of times... I'll believe it when I see it though.

I for one hope Owen Hargreaves has a good game tonight. I think he could bring some much needed balance to the side, and he will finally get a chance to prove whether or not he can perform on this stage.

Hargreaves gets a lot of stick, most of it unfair, from people who have not seen him play, week in, week out. He has been a success for Munich, and has performed the holding role well for 2 -3 seasons. Those who watch the German league, or Bayern Munich, talk highly of him, and I am more disposed to believe them than I am the usual fan who judges Hargreaves on the media hyperbole and 2 substitute appearances in pointless England friendlys.

Granted, during his brief sojourns for England Hargreaves has not impressed - but most of his appearances has been from the substitutes bench, when it is often difficult to make an impact. Given that no one watches him in the domestic league, 99% of fans have passed judgement on a brief 30 minutes here or there (usually in a friendly) - this is patently a bit unfair. Tonight he has the chance to set the record straight - I hope he takes it, for the benefit of the team, and himself.

It could be a quite challenging game with either side avoiding Germany in the next round . Wouldnt be suprised if Owen bags a hatrick the way he comes back after critism.
Rooney could do with a good run out for his match fitness,  but still hopes Crouchy comes of the bench to nod one in .

ENG 2-0 SWE
