Rio Ferdinand has conceded England got sucked into playing long balls into Peter Crouch against Trinidad & Tobago.

The Three Lions have been criticised in some quarters for their direct approach in Germany, rather than playing the ball through midfield.

England struggled for long periods against the World Cup minnows last Thursday before late goals gave them a priceless 2-0 success.

Ferdinand has now conceded England did opt to hit Crouch, although he does not believe they are a long-ball side.

The Three Lions could have to alter their game completely against Sweden with Wayne Rooney possibly playing alongside Michael Owen ahead of Crouch.

"We have probably played it more than we should but I wouldn't call us a long-ball team," said Ferdinand.

"The balls have been aimed in to the right people.

"There's a method to our play, to get it to Crouchie, but we went over the top in the last game.

"You see Peter there and think 'hit him' because he can be an easy option."
