Super intercontinental cup - Should we play in it?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool are supposed to play Boca Junior in the Intercontinental cup because we won the UEFA Super Cup. But we have a problem because we dont have many available dates to play the games. Should we bother? It would be another trophy but of what value? After the world cup our players will need as much rest as possible and the last thing they would want is two extra games including a long trip to Argentina. Perhaps the alternative of playing one game at the Bernabeu might be more attractive ? In my view its a game that we shouldnt be playing if we are going to make a real attempt to win EPL, let CSKA play the games instead and let Liverpool get on with winning the title.

It wouldn't bother me if we didn't play.

I dont know how "beneficial" it was to play in the World thingy in Japan.
We don't seem to "cash in" on stuff like that i.e use it as a springboard for commercial ventures.

Give the lads a break - last season was demanding enough.

Only professional to - play in goal (41 appearances), Defence, Midfield, Striker, and later be Director and then to be Manager (winning a Championship) - at one club

NO ... bad idea because too many games might cause some of the keys players tired ....

I wouldnt mind it, as long as the reserves and the subs get a run.

None of the regular players though.

Maybe Dudek, Warnock, Zenden. A few of the Youth Cup Heroes. Even Diao.

It could be a chance for the squad players to get a game under their belts.

It would be such a bonus if we did win the stupid cup with most of the team being youth or fringe players.

I wouldn't be surprised if that tw@t Sepp Blatter had somthing to do with this. One minute he is calling for 18 teams in the EPL, now he arranges games like this which are a complete waste of time. :veryangry
From Shankly to Brendan we follow our team, Rome to Istanbul we've all lived the dream. Our journey is long, our goal stays the same, to keep for our children the famous red name.

Its only one game and im sure it wont affect us too much as long as we dont come out with any injuries.

It might be a chance to test some of the new of younger players for Rafa.

If you could take away the fixture congestion, i'd agree.  We want to attract the best players to Liverpool, what better way (apart from being a prozzy for a Russian pimp) than to be world champions.

Only if it's in place of a pre-season friendly.

A trophy is a trophy, and it's one I'd like to win, but not at the expense of the players. We should only enter it if we're gonna use most of our youth players and see how they fair against Boca. However I wouldn't take any of our first choice senior squad. Gerrard, Garica and Alonso will all need to rest as will Carragher and others.

Thats a fair point, if its at the time of pre-season friendlies anyway and we cancel one of the arranged fixtures then thats not a problem.
Obviously the bernabeu option is the only one that should be considered. No way should the players be making trips with long haul flights after the season they have had and the world cup straight after.
