It has become routine in football that at the end of each season there's a massive clear out and a massive ship-in.
The loser in this is consistency of spirit and style and this doesn't matter too much on the continent where teams are unrecognisable from one season to another.
In the English league the most successful club EVER and the also-rans like the mancs,Leeds,Forest under Clough,Gooners etc were all based on consistency of the playing staff with just one or two additions coming in a season and keeping the winning style.
It's the English way and it works. Fergie got a bit carried away over the past couple of seasons and seemed to think he was infallible, made big changes and FA Cup or no FA Cup they are losing the plot and will find it very hard to get back to where they were.
We need to establish a style again and this is where I fell out of favour with Houllier who, despite all his claims, showed no sign of having a final picture he wanted to achieve. When the going got tough we kept looking like a rudderless ship and in typical continental fashion he chopped and changed , more in hope than judgement.
The revolution will take 4 or 5 years and be it under Curbs/O'Neil/McClaren or whoever, it must be done in the traditional ways and I do not think that there is a foriegn manager capable of doing it at Anfield.
WE taught them the modern game and they've little to teach us now!
