i think it would be a good deal for us to swap Kewell for Defoe. with Gonzalez coming in a few weeks we really don't need Kewell anymore and to be honest he doesn't have the heart to play for the club.

Defoe might not be outstanding but he's young, fast and could probably give us about 15 goals a season if he is given the chance.

Zenden is really a left-footed central midfielder.  However, Riise is good at left midfield and Gonzalez is too, so even if Kewell goes I'm not sure why we'd go for Downing.

It seems certain Defoe will leave Spurs, but do they need someone for left midfield?  I don't know.  They've got decent quality on both flanks and they've spent a fortune in recent seasons.

I would get rid of Kewell and Zenden. Downing is going to be an outstanding player and his distribution is superb!

Am I missing something here completely ? ??? What exactly does Defoe bring to LFC that makes it worth spending 10.9M on him ? I haven't seen anything in the past 2 seasons that makes me think "Sh!t "! We gotta have him !" If anything, the way Robbie Keane finished the season for Spurs and the complete change in attitude he has shown, I'd buy him ahead of Defoe.....Then again, I wouldn't opt for either of them....Is Rafa looking anywhere other than Spain or the UK ? All the other clubs are looking far beyond just two leagues for new additions, so why not LFC ?

Alves, bring him on. I mentioned him in the Mark Gonzalez in San Sebastian thread. He's been the only one RIGHT BACK (that's the position I've seen him playing, but actually he was quite prolific going upwards) that could match Gonzalez's Speed. Gonzalez had to use other resources in that match, because for once, the pace was not enough to beat his pair. Very Interesting player but, if you ask me, that's not the position we need to reinforce most. Finnan is secure. ANyway, good signing.

Sabre... can you translate the key points of this for us?  I think it says that Gonzalez would be happy for Prieto to come to Liverpool with him and that Paco has also been taking note of Prieto's performances.

Mundo Deportivo

Cheers mate.

Yes, either your online translator is good, or you're improving your Spanish.

He says exactly that, plus some quotes of Mark on Prieto. The journalist says that if Rafa asked Real Sociedad for refusal right to it's players it's precisely because LFC is interested on some of the players of Real Sociedad.

Paco Herrera has admitted that interest (that doesn't necessarily mean an inminent signing) and Gonzalez says "it would be beautiful to play alongside him". and that he was surprised and impressed of the quality of this player. He says that he enjoys seeing him touching the ball and dribling, and has joked with the fact that in training seasons he warned to Prieto not to make "thingies" (tricks and flicks) otherwise he would "give him" (a hard tackle, a smack, it's a Spanish expression).

FOr a latin player being dribbled blatantly is some sort of insult, let alone if the ball goes through your legs, in that case many hard tackles are seen afterwards. Prieto has the ability to dribble and good touch, but he must grow as a player a season more. We don't have a player like that in LFC, his one on one ability is much better than Kewell's  for instance, or any LFC squad player, he'd be very handy for the right wing. But he also needs to work out his body a little bit to be UTTER UTTER class.

I think it's a bit early to go to Anfield this summer, I think it should be next summer. Only an important offer from another club would hurry up things.

IN fact I think that he eventually will go to Liverpool, the question would be when. If it is now, LFC will need to put LOTS of money on the table (no less than Xabi Alonso), but if LFC waits one year, they might have a reasonable deal, as Prieto ends contract in 2008. Rafa has in the mean time the refusal right to have other clubs under control, so the situation is nice.

I told you already that this interest was real. Prieto as I said earlier is the best dribbler I've seen in 25 years, and that's to say something. He has a unnatural ability to sit down players, and when I say unnatural, I'm saying "better than Joaquin" or the best dribbler you've seen!

I've noticed a trend in Rafa's transfer preferances. He got Crouch from a relegated team, he's looking at Pennent (apparently) who went down with Birmingham, and Gonzales went down with Albacete and a player from Sociedad who have had a tough time of it this season. It leads me to believe that he likes having players around who know how to fight and keep trying for wins. He's a cunning old devil I tells ya!

it says that they had a 10.9 mil deal for berbatov, i dont think spurs can expect that sort of money for defoe, maybe more like 6-7 mil which i think is reasonable.

people seem to forget that although defoe has been going through a bit of bad form (which has led to him not playing, as well as the fact that keane has been playing so well) he is, and has been quality for spurs.

the stormer he scored against arsenal last season was just a part of the brilliance he has brought to spurs over the years, i think its ridiculous that people are now saying that he is no longer a good player just because of a dip in form

at liverpool he would excel imo.

i have no doubt, and this goes for SWP, a move to anfield would totally rejuvenate their carrers on all fronts.

BBC rumour page says that we're gonna have some competition for Alves and that some Scandinavians are gonna plough £70m into the club.

Totally agree with that mate, people tend to have short memories, when Defoe scored the goal for England away to Poland in the WC qualifier people were saying Owens place was under threat.
I agree with anyone that says he hasnt pushed on from there, but all he needs is a move imo, he is in a different league to Cisse and has a far better all round game.
If we did sign him i have no doubts at all that he would be a major success.

They're two different stories you muppet. Allow me to simplify. We're going to hae some competition for signing Alves. And in a different story, some Scandinavians want to buy a piece of the club for around £70m, it is rumoured.

His signing is apparently just a formality now, but haven't heard anything concrete in a while now.
