Did anyone see in one of the Sunday papers this week that Rafa is in for Defoe ?
Not sure what paper, but when i was watching Jimmy Hills sunday supplement, one of the reporters held up a paper...looked like the Mail or the Express and on the whole back page, it was a headline about Benitez going for Defoe.
Havent seen anything anywhere else....has anyone else ?

Rafa bid for Defoe in January but was (as has been the case on more than one occassion) he was too late. Defoe would be a quality addition to our squad. He has the pace of cisse and the finishing of Fowler (well maybe not quite).

Darren Bent has also been mentioned on more than one occassion. I will take them both please.

Sabre... can you translate the key points of this for us?  I think it says that Gonzalez would be happy for Prieto to come to Liverpool with him and that Paco has also been taking note of Prieto's performances.

Mundo Deportivo

Cheers mate.

Watched Real Madrid against Sevilla last night and just wanted to mention Daniel Alves, he looks absolute quality, he is a great dribbler with a decent shot on him and is up and down the field all of the time.
He had a great game against Middlesbrough last week as well.
The reason i mentioned him was that i am sure we have been linked with him previously.
Well so far what i have seen he looks the business.

We have been previously linked with Alves. Is he not a Right Back? I wouldn't trade in Finnan for anyone.

No point in buying any striker unless he's better than the present crop.

He plays on the right but is more like a winger the way he beats players and gets shots in.
Admittedly i have only seen him a couple of times but he looks class, and would be a class wing back, who imo would chip in with between 5-10 goals a season.

Rafa aims to Kop Downing
By PHIL THOMAS

STEWART DOWNING is a shock name on Rafa Benitez’s list of summer targets.

But the Liverpool chief faces an uphill struggle if he is to prise the England rookie from Middlesbrough.

Benitez made regular checks on Downing, 21, over the closing stages of the season and was mightily impressed.

He is still keen to land a wide player, despite Chilean Mark Gonzalez’s imminent arrival from Albacete after a work-permit wrangle delayed the deal last year.

Now much will depend on Boro playing ball on Downing, who is under contract until 2010.

Benitez is also hunting a striker, and saw his chances of landing Jermain Defoe increase yesterday when Spurs agreed a £10.9million deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Bulgarian hitman Dimitar Berbatov.

Defoe knows his failure to play regularly last season was a major factor in his failure to win a World Cup slot.

And though Mido is leaving, Defoe’s chances of being first choice have not been helped by Berbatov’s capture.

Benitez is on the verge of landing Brazilian Dani Alves from Seville.

The £8m-rated right-back, 23, said: “Liverpool is a very appetising option because of the Spanish coach they have and the players they have there from Spain.

Zenden, Kewell, Gonzalez and now he's looking at Downing? he's a good player but 4 wide left players doesn't make sense unless he's gonna sell Zenden?  ???

Apparently kewell might go to spurs in a swap deal that would see defoe heading to anfield & with zenden not having the pace to be an out & out winger rafa might be looking for someone to offer competition to speedy
