LIVERPOOL  V  WEST HAM UNITED - FA CUP FINAL Official thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

that was hell to watch...... :(

and for the most part we were struggling after koncheskys cross put the hammers ahead second half.. the back 5 were offkey at vital periods in the game and players slipping and miscontrolling passes were not helping matters. but...

once again captain marvel, roy of the rovers...call him what you like as long as the name gerrard is at the end of it has produced the best strike i have ever seen. he did it against olympiakos and he started the ball rolling in istanbul. 3 of the most important goals in recent history..

but that second one, will stay scorched in my mind for all time.
what a club this is and what a talent we possess on the pitch fighting its name in every corner of the planet. well played to him, a true legend whose name will reverberate across the decades..

istanbul part 2? that nearly topped it!

Game Ratings:

Reina - 7 Unlike his normal self all game, until the final minute of the extra time, where he had to palm away a West Ham goal attempt that hit the post. Needless to say, he totally redeemed himself with the penalty shootout antics.

Finnan - 7 Pretty solid, more or less keeping West Ham's left flank at bay. Good game going forward.

Carragher - 6 Not like his usual self, silly misunderstanding with Reina for the own goal. Looked confused at times with West Ham's attack from the flanks.

Hyypia - 6 Decent performance but looked outrunned at times at the back by some of West Ham's attack and Ashton's physical presence. Also shadowed by a badly placed penalty.

Riise - 5 A very poor game in defence by his standards. The West Ham right flank had caused us trouble all game and was responsible for the first goal. Decent game going forward. Well taken penalty.

Gerrard - 9 What can I say? Leading by examples, 2 absolutely cracking goals, but perhaps lacking some of the midfield guile that he normally possesses which could have halted some of West Ham's attacks.

Sissoko - 8 Ran his socks off, more or less sorted out any West Ham attack that went his way.

Alonso - 7 Not a very good game, distribution was average. Perhaps his average performance was due to his recurring ankle injury.

Kewell - 6 Did not have much of the ball in the first half and was promptly subbed off for Morientes. Did not look much of a threat though.

Cisse - 7 A well taken half volley but other than that, his contribution was pretty insignificant. On another note, what is with his boots and.... hairstyle?

Crouch - 6 Served as a decent link between the midfield and the attack but did not look too much of a threat during his time on the pitch.

Morientes - 6 His presence upfront was pretty non-existent, nevertheless a hard working display from the Spaniard.

Hamann - 8 Effective display when on the pitch. Seemed to have stablised the team in some way. Well taken penalty.

Kromkamp - 7 Decent performance, both defensively and offensively. Seem to be causing West Ham some trouble on the right flank late in the game.

Gerrard what a player :) ...That second goal was just incredible, after bring injured in the stoppage time,AMAZING!!!

Reina made twoor three superb saves aswell but feel sorry for Kewell and Xabi.Great performance though and thoroughly deserved.

WELL DONE LADS!!!!  :bowdown  :bowdown  :bowdown

I think those changes show how great a manager Rafa is. Kewell must have wanted to play the final more than anyone after the CL exit last year and Alonso got past his possible injury to play and they both came out for the best of the team. Rafa is a genious. great game.

What a come back for Reina. Actually cost us two goals and then he comes back and saves us.

Haha I still haven't won a bet but I'm happy as a fox in a chicken house. 100quid down the drain. :D

What a final, just like the Champions League final last year it was a rollercoaster of emotion.

The first twenty minutes weren't all that exciting but then there came three goals in 11 mins and one onside disallowed goal. Reina made a fantastic double save and then 8 mins into the second half Crouch put the goal at Gerrard's mercy but he showed none with a powerful shot that thundered into the roof of the net. The match was coming to a close with 4 mins of extra time when Gerrard (in the 1st min) showed his class with a 40 yard drive.

Extra time came and went with only really Reina's bloody excellent save to take note of.

One year one from Istanbul we were yet again in a penalty shoot-out for a cup and again the goalkeeper was the hero.

The players gave everything the had to win the match in the 63rd game of the season and this shows their loyalty to the club and the fans.

Rafa is building a team that has done the fans proud over the last two seasons and with the right additions to the squad next season the EPL could be back at Anfield.

And i was very impressed with Kronkamp efforts

Kuds to the hammers, they did punch above their weight, all the best to them next season

i totally agree with you on kromkamp he provided us with a great outlet down the right late on.

i thought hamann was good when he came on as well

Gerrard should be a 10 rating!

and the Spaniards weren't joking when they said Reina is Spain's top penalty stopper! :D

My group of Liverpool fanatics gatecrashed and took over a Leeds United Pub and we completely drowned out the Leeds fans there

Exciting nailbiting match.
