we are currently fourth and three points ahead of newcastle.

still to play birmingham and newcastle
and newcastle have wolves, soton (i think) and liverpool.

IF we beat birmingham then (i think) we'd only need maybe a draw from the newcastle game.

NUFC will lose to soton...remember they are absolute s##t away from home ...... beat wolves and draw lfc.

.....we might not even need a draw or win last game of season....we'll have 4th in the bag by then................I hope.......

Imagine this:

Last game of the season Liverpool 4th 2 points ahead of NUFC
who are in 6th with Villa a point behind LFC in 5th.

Liverpool and Newcastle draw........
Villa win......

Imagine villa got the last CL place.......

Sad to say I believe none of the contenders are good enough to be in the CL.

Without CL football this season we've done jacksh1t, I doubt being in the CL will help our domestic form, just be another distraction

Last six fixtures (current position and reverse fixture result)

Charlton (h) L0-1 (8th, L2-3 at The Valley)
Fulham (h) D0-0 (10th, W2-1 at Loftus Road)
Man Utd (a) W1-0 (3rd, L1-2 at Anfield)
Middlesboro (h) W2-0 (11th, D0-0 at The Riverside)
Birmingham (a) W3-0 (6th, W3-1 at Anfield)
Newcastle (h) 15-05-04 (5th, D1-1 at St James Park)

Points so far - 10/12
Points possible - 13/18

Well we beat what was in front of us - a disappointing Birmingham side. I hope Heskey impressed sufficiently to secure the speculated transfer. I guess the best thing now is that we won't have any of the dross in the CL - Bolton, Villa, Charlatan and co are not that good, just having a (by their own standards) good season.

Two wins for Newcastle is now the requirement, I suspect a draw will be the result at Anfield either way leaving us 4th on 13 points. Should really have made it 14-18 points in retrospect

Last six games results (and reverse fixture result)

Charlton (h) L0-1 (8th, L2-3 at The Valley)
Fulham (h) D0-0 (10th, W2-1 at Loftus Road)
Man Utd (a) W1-0 (3rd, L1-2 at Anfield)
Middlesboro (h) W2-0 (11th, D0-0 at The Riverside)
Birmingham (a) W3-0 (6th, W3-1 at Anfield)
Newcastle (h) D1-1 (5th, D1-1 at St James Park)

FINAL POSITION : 4th
FINAL POINTS TALLY : 11

So unlucky EVERYBODY, we gained 11 points and finished fourth. A bit surprising I must admit, though I did suspect the total to finish fourth might be a little low.

I think one thing sums up how average the result yesterday was - Newcastle haven't won away since October. They couldn't even beat Wolves at home and we couldn't beat them at Anfield. Only excuse is we didn't need a result, but the players should be trying harder anyway

Yeah, after the "buzz" of reaching the CL, yesterdays result brought me back down to earth . There are still many issues that need to be addressed . However I,ve promised myself not to start moaning about team and mgr until the second week of next season.
It was interesting to hear some TV pundits this weekend still questioning whether Foolier will be with us at the start of the new season.:)

I'd be shocked if we exit the CL early and falter early in the league and the board keep Kermit on. If we keep following the same pattern we have the last couple of years ie struggling to make fourth, then I can't see even the most ardent of Houllier supporters keeping faith

Next season will be sh*t or bust for Foolier and he knows it.
Unless make real progress in terms of quality of play and winning something worthwhile I can't see him remaining with us. This is his last throw of the dice.

Thats precisely the point. I feel that liverpool are more likely to make a bad start and struggle if GH is still the manager. Cisse is good in france, but that doesn not mean he will have the same impact here. I remember Newcastle once bought the french top-scorer (Stephen *something*) and he scored abt 2 goals thru the whole season. So we should not think that just because Cisse is arriving, we have somehow become title contenders.

And i can already forsee GH ready made excuse for next season if we do not start it well

a)"The players are just back from Euro Cup. They need until X-mas to get back in groove"
b)"Cisse needs 1 season to become as good as henry"
c)"Baros is our 1st choice striker" (but is forever stuck in the bench).

Yesterdays result typifies our season. Just when we thought we will go a run, we are brought back to reality. We got the draw because of Gerrard & to a lesser extent Owen. These 2 are the only reason why liverpool have got 4th place.

But this match is really not that significant for us. SO i shall not complain too much. :D

I think in the end, Liverpool did not really want to win as this will kick newcastle out of Europe (can see GH & Robson smiling at each other in the touch-line while the match was progressing).

Perhaps if you want to excuse the result/performance you can argue Newcastle needed it more than we did. But surely that gave Houllier more chance to try something, to give a different formation or players a chance?!?!?!? We played the same players, the same formation and the same lack of commitment. Yet again Gerrard seemed to be the only shining star (bar Owen's super finish)
