The latest comments from the Boss:

Benitez Considering Fowler Contract Situation

Rafael Benitez admits it would be 'easy' for him to give Robbie Fowler a new contract.

The Liverpool boss knows that would further increase his popularity on Merseyside, where the Anfield faithful are willing him to grant Fowler's wish of a new deal when his current short-term contract ends this summer.

But the Anfield chief, who is likely to keep faith with Fowler on Sunday in the Lancashire derby at Blackburn, insists he has a responsibility to the club to look at all the options first.

Fowler has scored in his last three starts for Liverpool and has made it clear he is prepared to wait patiently for a decision from the Spanish coach.

Benitez says: 'It would be easier to just say 'yes' to Robbie, but I need to be sure, to analyse and to talk to my staff to make sure.

'It is not a question of saying 'is he a good player' of course he is. But that is not the point, it is whether it is the right decision for the club.'

Benitez adds: 'It is difficult for me. It would be easier to say we want to renew Fowler's contract, and we would have an agreement. That would be really easy for me.

'But I have a responsibility to check all the possibilities and he knows that. Then I will try to do the best for the club.

'He is working to improve his physical condition and we will decide in a few weeks.'

Benitez has found himself linked with more than a dozen strikers in recent days, from Blackburn's Craig Bellamy to Real Madrid legend Raul.

Benitez dismisses such talk, saying: 'The strikers' situation does depend on Fowler, he is an option. People will read a lot of names that I am supposed to be interested in.

'I do not like discussing such things now, and I am very surprised by the amount of names and people saying I have talked to players. That is not true.

'I am happy with my strikers because they are scoring goals and I want to see them scoring more goals until the end of the season.

'I have read the media, I see many names. One is Raul and he is a good player, a very good player. But I would prefer to only think about the future of our strikers.'

Benitez is still determined to complete the capture of Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez, who is expected to get a Spanish passport shortly which would negate the need for a work permit.

One has already been refused, but Liverpool now believe the youngster's quality is so well known that when they re-apply, permission will be granted by the Home Office.

Benitez says: 'We will hope to get Mark Gonzalez with a work permit and a new passport, I was surprised when we did not get permission before for him to join us because of the quality he had.

'He has done well in Spain on loan with Real Sociedad, and he is better than many players in the Premier League. Hopefully we will be able to solve the situation now.

'My idea is to use him next season, he has enough quality for the Premier League.'

------------------------------
I've given up trying to interpret Rafa's true intentions with all of these comments on Robbie.  I want to think that there's some unseen strategic angle to all of this...perhaps bargaining power in the negotiation for other forwards.  His constant "wait and see" comments are a touch worrying though.  Might he just be preparing us all for a let down?  I certainly hope not.

Common Robbie...hat trick on Sunday, lad!  Help Rafa do the right thing!  :buttrock

Ivor, that compilation is quality.

I believe Robbie will be here next season, just have this feeling.

He will be on the score sheet with 2 goals.

at the moment he is playing like a leader and a good element to have around the squad, rafa won't have a problem with age it is up to robbie to prove it on the training field that this is worth putting the effort in for , we on the outside will never know what goes on day today.... and nobody knows what rafa is going to do next......... i just hope we never go to war with spain because with rafa as a general we would be fecked :D

Quick stat:

2005/2006 season
Fowler - 17 games (9 as sub), 7 goals
Morientes - 40 games (11 as sub), 8 goals

Robbie's season is 3 and a half months old (began 7th Jan 2006).
Morientes' season is over 9 months old (began 13th July 2005).

If Morientes is at the club next season and Fowler isn't, it'll be an absolute joke of a decision.

Fowler is deserving of at least one more season. He scored 3 goals that showed the strikers instinct we our other 3 front men lack. If rafa decides not to extend his stay i'll be 100% behind his decision and i hope all other kopited do to altho i doubt that'd be the case after seeing a few recent managerial decisions being booed at anfield   I know rafa wont be sentimental in making his decision and he'll make the right call
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,
He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,
Steve Gerrard Gerrard.

My tuppence worth as a Spurs supporter with respect for Liverpool...your boy Rafa should stop :censored: about and give Fowler an extension. I reallly don't think there are many players left in the league, let alone the Prem, who genuinely, genuinely love their club like Fowler loves Liverpool. I mean, aside from the fact he's a fookin' phenomenal finisher, his passion for the shirt is too rare for your Rafa to ignore. If he doesn't give him a new comtract I believe it'd be a big mistake. Met him once tooo, and have to say I thought he was a top bloke, the real deal and not like many of  the flash 'arrys in the league these days.

Hope he stays with you for all of you...

New contract simple as.

If we dont keep him Rafa has to come up with a striker that at the end of next season will make us say "Robbie who"

Give it a rest, sunshine...your pathetic wind-up attempts are tired.  Go watch your Cisse compilation videos and let the rest of us actually discuss some football.
