Fookin' tabloid journalism! - Talk of juve making a bid for stevie...

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby hawkmoon269 » Thu Apr 06, 2006 8:42 pm

According to reports in the English media on Thursday, Juventus are ready to snatch Steven Gerrard away from Liverpool this summer. The Reds captain has been no stranger to close season transfer sagas over the past few years, and this summer is set to be no different.

Juventus may be striding away with the Serie A title, but their failings in Europe this year, brought to a head on Wednesday with their aggregate defeat at the hands of Arsenal, have prompted a rethink.

When manager Fabio Capello was asked after the match about rebuilding his squad for next season, he replied bluntly, "We are already working on that."

And one area thought to be in need of strengthening is the midfield, with talk of Patrick Vieira being offloaded rife around the Stadio delle Alpi.

But Liverpool would be very unwilling to let their star player leave Anfield having fought tooth and nail to repel the advances of Chelsea last summer, and Real Madrid the year before.

Gerrard signed a new four year deal with the Merseyside club last July.

WHOLESALE CHANGES

Capello is not likely to stop there in his recruiting though as the Old Lady looks to bounce back from a second quarter final defeat against Premiership opposition in successive years.

They already have an agreement to sign Parma's exciting right-winger Marco Marchionni and media reports suggest a similar arrangement could see Inter Milan midfielder Cristiano Zanetti move to the Delle Alpi.

Zanetti, who has been forced to the fringes at Inter, was a key part of Capello's championship-winning side at AS Roma in 2001 and would be a useful addition to the squad.

But if Juve are to mount a more intensive challenge to get back the trophy they last won 10 years ago, more radical and certainly more expensive purchases are likely to be necessary.

If the past is anything to go by, Juve will probably need to rid themselves of one or two of their big earners before bringing in any top-class signings.

There has been constant speculation surrounding their Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has looked irritated and unhappy in recent games and has come in for intense scrutiny and criticism from the media.

IN BRIEF

Inter owner Massimo Moratti could be ending his association with the club.... and Milan's Dario Simic is likely to leave the San Siro after an outburst aimed at coach Carlo Ancelotti.

=================

When are they going to fucking leave us alone?  Year-in-Year-out it's Stevie going here, and Stevie going there.  Ok, I know when you have argueably (most on here would remove the argueably!) best midfield player in the world, you might get the odd rumour - but come on, every transfer window?  He has committed to Liverpool for at least another 4 years (or is it 3.5) when will they start writing about someone else!

I totally know what you mean.  I was pure raging after reading that story.  Its just another story trying to get Gerrard.  I mean ok I can understand clubs wanting the "Best Midfielder" in the world but when are they going to realise he has committed to Liverpool as he is Liverpool through and through so why dont they just leave us and the Gerrard bids alone!!!!!!!!

This story is rubbish. Even Juve denied it on SSN about 2 weeks ago. I wouldn't take any notice of it.

Hmmm, Gerrard is going to trade a hitting-its-stride, soon-to-be-English-Champions side for a side that is well past it and very much showing its age, is he?  No chance.

Sometimes you just have to shake your head with these "rumours"!

Unfortunately, like the "Rafa to Madrid" whisperings, there's always going to be speculation about Gerrard.  It comes with the territory when you're world class!

I didn't mean to sound like I believed the rumours - I don't.  What gets me pi$$ed off is the constant attempts to unsettle him, and write stories which anyone with a brain, would take with a pinch of salt.  Too many journalist's take the easy (lazy) way out, and don't research a decent story.

tabloid sh*te, putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 563

it's the easiest, cheapest form of footballing journalism - side A needs to strengthen their squad. side B has a world class player. oooh let's speculate that one of the players side A would love to have is the world class bloke from side B. really mr journalist? no sh!t?

we'd love to have adriano, ronaldinho and deco but it doesn't mean for a millisecond it's gonna happen :sleep

it's all about selling papers

That's the problem - we see a "Gerrard to Juve" headline plastered over the back of the waste of good paper, and we immediately buy it.  [or like me you stand at the newstand, read the article, and put the paper back, and pay for your petrol!]

Steve G isn't going anywhere.  It's paper talk and nothing else.  This won't put him off the rest of the season,  he's stronger than that.

Another point - do you think the money men (or even Rafa!) would take the reported £30M being touted in the press?

And if you had the choice, and taking the obvious passion out of the equation, how much would you be willing to let Gerrard go for?

Realistically, I think if we were offered £40m we'd have to seriously consider it.

Yes - you'd be able to buy a number of quality players for £40M - I think it was Shankly who said that no one player is bigger that Liverpool.

But it's hard to guage how important Stevie is to Liverpool. Ok, we have one games without him - but would we have one in Istanbul without him - I doubt it.  I just don't know what limit of an offer I would accept.
