We'll get 4th

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JBG » Sun May 09, 2004 12:04 am

I predicted all season that we would finish 5th but now I am prepared to eat humble pie and claim that we will finish 4th.

Liverpool's performances in the last three games have been very good and we at last are playing the kind of football we are capable of.

We are now 6 points ahead of Newcastle with a better goal difference.

The Barcodes have two games in hand but one of the biggest cliches in football is that its better to have points on the board rather than games in hand and the pressure is on Newcastle to go out and win their matches against Wolves and Southampton.

I honestly believe that Newcastle will struggle to get full points against Wolves and Southampton and there is a real possibility that we will claim 4th place before the Toon come to Anfield.

Even if they do beat Wolves and Southampton and, unless they win both games 3-0 or more (possible but unlikey) a draw will do for us at Anfield.

Either way, it looks like Newcastle will have to win at Anfield no matter what happens and I think this will suit Liverpool's counter attacking style.

Its all set up for us and things could get even better if Newcastle mess up tomorrow.

even so, i'd still like too see us finish with a flourish. did you see the heart that we played with today, if we play like that next week, i'd feel very optimistic next season.

Its amazing what a few good results can do.

The performances over the last 4 games have been very good imo. Against Fulham confidence and finishing were missing and that was it. Thats 4 clean sheets in a row and we've played 3 good sides and a decent one. Impressive.

The lads are doing these last few games exactly what i've been saying they are capable of all season. If we can finish this season with another win then i think this can stand us in good stead for next season.

The players will be thinking the season is ending at the wrong point and will hopefully be looking forward to next season. For me the only player in the side recently who's looked out of sorts has been Owen. He should have had 4 goals yesterday, he looks like his confidence is truely shattered, but still managed a good performance.

The players around him though have been superb, Gerrard has bossed just about every game he's played, Murphy is now starting find the form of last season and pulling his weight, Finnan looks to be gaining confidence again and the defence is starting to look tight again.

All this with Houllier as the boss aswell.

What we need is to get this sorted and start next season as we've finished this one. The ability to challenge is there in the current squad, with the right additions who knows?

Its amazing that people now think that 4th is good (it is not even podium for f##k sake, hold the champagne).

If I said I was going to kick you in the nuts and then just punched you in the stomach, would you think you'd had a great day and go around (still winded) boasting about how great your goolies feel.

I am not too sure yet, I just hope Newcastle only get a point at Southampton and then I can relax going into the last game knowing we are under no pressure

By the way Big Niall, ther eis no way I'm saying that I'm happy with 4th place. We have been an absolute disgrace at times this season and I still think that Houllier needs to go in the summer and an overhaul (4 key players) of the first team.

However, the board have made it clear that Houllier will be here next year and I think that it is vitally important for the club that we get CL football next year.

4th place is not good enough for this club and the season has been poor at times, but to be honest real supporters will have to acknowledge that failing to qualify for the CL next year would set us back years.

I am still a critic of Houllier and a number of the players but it is only fair that they be commended for pulling off some top class performances over the past couple of games.

Its fair enough that people criticise the team where criticism is due but sometimes even the biggest critics have to give praise where it is due.

I dont think there are alot of managers over the last 6 years you couldnt be critical about!
I do feel GH is addressing the right areas so i am confident that 4th will be ours and next season we will be challenging!

We know we are capable of beating the Big Boys our problem has been consistency ! And GH is looking at chopping the inconsistent players i.e Heskey Henchoz the right wing and a partner for Stevie G!

I'm quite optimistic for next season!

And i belive that this last season has made the nucleus of our team stronger for the season to come!

I hope Southampton get a point, I know Owen said he is still haunted by last day defeats to Bradford (for f##k sake) and Chelsea costing us CL.

If we get 4th, spend a lot but get lose qualifying, we'd be f##ked financially unless that thai guy (how corrupt is he?) buys in.
