i noticed this aswell. there were a couple of times in the first half when i thought "blimey, where did warnock get that extra yard of pace from?". i've given the lad a lot of stick recently but today he played really well.

I've been guilty of giving the lad stick recently myself St Mike, but he was good today.

I thought he'd play a lot more games this season and with England's limited options at left back, I said last summer he had an outside chance of making the World Cup squad.  As it's panned out though Riise has had an excellent season at left back, he's tightened up defensively no end.  As a result though, Warnock's progress has been severely slowed down.  As it is now he's not even guaranteed to be a Liverpool player next season let alone in the England squad imo.

While we're on formations. What was the formation today? Some are saying we played 5 at the back which was true at times but looked like 3-6-1 to me with evryone interchanging as the game went on. I must admit i don't really like Crouch playing on his own up front (it was the wrong way to go against Arsenal last week) because i don't think he is mobile enough and he often gets isolated but today it worked a treat and the toon defenders didn't seem to know who was marking who for much of the game.

It was more of a 3-6-1/3-4-3 as far as I could tell.  Kewell and Cisse seemed to be playing quite far forward on both wings with Crouch on his own centrally.

It worked well and our players adapted to it surprisingly well, but part of the reason it worked so well was the surprise factor.  Newcastle never thought we'd line up like that, most of us were surprised in fact.

Although we probably have the players to fit  the 3-at-the-back system, I don't think it would work on a regular basis.  If teams are expecting us to play it, it's a very easy system to cancel out if the opposing team also plays a similar system.  We found this out a lot in the Roy Evans era when we played this way.  It can work a treat against a 4-4-2 like today though and it's good to know we can use it on the odd occasion.  I remember Benitez did it against Spurs last season as well, but this is the first time he's started a game with it since - straight out of the blue.

Think you're being harsh there Lynds. I thought the captain had a solid game and the technique for the goal was first class.

???

Can't agree with that Ciggy.  I thought that was his best game for a while.  Parker and Emre never got a grip on the game, so Stevie and Didi were obviously doing something right, especially considering we were the away side.  I've not seen a home midfield pushed so deep for such long periods in ages (in the premiership anyway).

Agree we looked like the home team for the first 40 mins today.

What's happened to Parker? He's good little holding player but i like hime at Charlton when he was bombing forward and scoring goals left right and centre.

Just playing in a poor side mate, he's a good player though.  His spell at Chelsea seemed to suck all the flair out of him, but on the flip side it made him a more disciplined and positionally sound player.

He's had a few injuries as well this season.  Should be in the World Cup squad, far better bet than Jenas imo.

Not really relevant to the topic but i can't be arsed to start a new one. What has happened to the official website the past few months? It used to be spot on and up to date but it's gone downhill bigtime. I keep popping on to see if i can get a few quotes from the manager/players or perhaps a match report but there's nothing there. Rant over :veryangry

Think we watched a different game then, he aswell as Rafa can also can be critised you know?
Hamann done more work than Stevie did today, and TBH he hasnt been exeptional for about 5 games TBH.

Agree on Hamman who has been excellent since Momo was injured. You're right Gerrard hasn't been exceptional for a few games but then it can't be easy living up to the VERY high standards he sets himself. But it's a measure of the progress that Rafa is making that Gerrard can play below his imperious best and we still win the game 3-1 with better performances from a few of his teamates. We didn't really see that last season.

I have been criticising him for the last few games, he's been below his best.  Today was a big improvement but he still has another gear or two to go up.
