LIVERPOOL VS CHARLTON - time to turn it up a notch

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It would be very easy to say "well i'll settle for another 1-0 win" but to be honest I'd like to see a little bit more for this one. We've got an absolutely massive game on Wednesday and what better way to prepare than for the strikers to bang a few goals in and get some confidence?

It'll be interesting to see the lineup that Rafa goes with. Finnan missed the Ireland game last night with a neck injury but should return and I presume Carragher will come back in at the expense of Daniel Agger. Upfront, Crouch will definitely start and I'd like to see either Fowler or Cisse alongside him. Morientes just isn't doing it. I'd also be tempted to bring Garcia in for Kromkamp on the right hand side of midfield.

Charlton aren't a good side. When we played down there we were god damn awful so we owe them one.

                                   Reina

        Finnan        Carragher       Hyypia          Riise

        Garcia         Alonso           Gerrard         Kewell

                         Crouch           Fowler

Nobody can tell me that that team isn't strong enough to beat Charlton. If Fowler plays I actually fancy him to get his first goal in this one.

2-0, Fowler and Crouch.

if finnan is out kromkamp will go back there. if not this is my team

             pepe
finnan   carra   sami    jar

kromkamp gerrard xabi kewell

       fowler crouch

i think kromkamp had a good game on the right against a good man city team and he provides us with a bit more defensive cover on the right as he and finnan can switch with ease.

fowler with crouch , sooner or later we have to create something robbie can have a shot at and imho the best chance come from crouches knock downs and good footwork on the edge of the box.

kewell or gerrard for man of the match and 3-1 a nice portion of revenge cheers

Last week's 1-0 win over City left me, like many others, feeling rather empty due to our lack of killer instinct. Would another 1-0 win cause a similar reaction amongst fans, or is it all about the 3 points at this stage?

Of course the win is the essential part of a game, but a few goals would do us good, and our goal difference could certainly do with it. It would also give our strikers a great deal of good to get on the scoresheet, especially with such a massive game coming up on Wednesday when we have to win by two goals.

Three points first an foremost.  Everything else is a bonus.  If the team performances are good and consistent and we wn then the striker problem remans as an afterthought.  I am convinced however that its just waiting for the dam walls to crack and somebody is going to get a real hiding off us.

No its not about just the 3 points at this stage, doesn't anyone else think that if the players win 1-0 in 5 games out 6 or whatever it is, that it is difficult for them to change the tactics and the tempo they play at ?
We need to really go at Charlton with an attacking line up and with a big start, the same way we will approach the Benfica game, get the players playing on a different level to the cautious mundane approach recently adopted.
Otherwise we run the risk of allowing Benfica to settle.
I would play the same team as St Mike said. It would win the 3 points anyway and get the players in the right frame of mind....and the fans.

i've felt this way for a while aswell.

it's almost as if i want rafa to just let the leash off the team and let them express themselves more. somebody is going to get a hiding and it could well be charlton on saturday.

since the turn of the year i don't think we've been playing with the freedom we were leading up to christmas. the home games against wigan and newcastle we were superb, creating bucketloads of chances and looking really good. however in recent games we've lost that zip, despite still picking up good results.

like the tactis we have to be honest.  The goals are just not coming manly due to confidence in my opinion.  It just feels like we are not firing fully but if we do then its a good beating for somebody.

To change what has been in context a successful season would IMO be foolish at this stage

I would settle for a 1-0 victory on Saturday. But I hope for sure that the players shows more of a "killer-instinct" next week against Benfica, when we are 100 % dependant on a two goal-win.

Even if I always hope for a Fowler goal, I wouldn`t mind him waiting until the 25th when we are taking on Everton at Anfield. That is purely selfish, as I will attend the match at Anfield. Being present as He crowns his home-coming with a goal against our city-rivals would be a magic moment to treasure for the rest of my life

That is a difficult question to answer. The three point's is the main priority as we'll all agree, but I'd hate to be level on point's with Utd at the end of the year and have it come down to goal difference.

I'd like to see us score at least three against Charlton on Saturday, and like you I think Fowler will get his first if he play's.

If we do score 3 goals against Charlton, we'll have more chance of beating Benfica by two goals next week.

I think that we have to pace ourselves, like marathon runners.  There's no point killing ourselves to win every game 3-0, when 1-0 gets the same number of points.  We've been creating chances playing in a very reserved way, but the problem has been our finishing.  I think we should keep going as we have been and, yes, one day we'll finish all our chances and give someone a hiding.

Actually i wouldn't mind another toothless 1-0 performance....

We have bigger fish to fry in the champions league... (ie...beating benfica by 2 goal margin).

Has to be Crouch and Fowler up front. It's an utter mystery why these two haven't yet played together.

I wonder if Agger may play alongside Jamie at the back - Hyypia will be a huge player for us at the tail-end of the season, and he could definitely do with a breather.

I can't see Gerrard moving into the centre of the midfield yet reckon it will be Alonso and Hamann in the middle.

Can't see us getting beat especially with Carra back but also can't see us scoring alot, my prediction 1-0 Crouch

If we're going to open up and give a team a hiding sooner or later I'd rather it was against Benfica than Charlton.  Let's be honest, there is little to play for in the league besides the difference between 2nd and 3rd.  It would be great to get 2nd ahead of the scum, but I'd happily take 3rd and another good run in Europe.

Charlton are a bogey side to an extent, but not just for us, for all the top sides.  We're favourites to win obviously, but I won't be surprised if we play out a lacklustre draw (with one eye on Benfica) before coming out and hammering Benfica 3 or 4 nil next week.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that most of the hard work in the league is done for this year.  I can't see us collapsing to finish lower than 3rd.  But we still have a great chance to do something in the champions league again, a few big teams are guaranteed to go out this round so I really think from the quarter finals on anyone can win it.
