Lfc boys for england - At least three on the plane

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Very interesting and entertaining England game tonight vs Uruguay. Good team effort, Joe Cole outstanding on the left of midfield, but some good performances from the Liverpool lads at Anfield.

Gerrard was quality in the first half - Carrick playing as the holding midfielder gave him a lot more attacking license than he tends to get when Lampard's alongside him. Some great touches as well, which made mugs of some of the Uruguay defence early on.

Carragher got an unexpected 70-odd minutes at left back, looked as solid as a rock, and made some fantastic slide-rule passes through, particularly one to Cole from midfield through to a very dangerous area. Carra was always going to be on the plane to Germany due to the fact that he can cover anywhere in the back 4, but I think Sol Campbell's lack of form and fitness, Woodgate's constant breaking down, and Rio's all-too-regular lapses may be bringing him closer to the starting line up than we'd expected. I thought Rio was abysmal in the first half tonight, giving the ball away on many occasions and misplacing 10-yard passes.

Crouch came on for Rooney, and in many ways turned the game. Great header for the goal, and some very high quality work on the floor too. He really has a great weight of pass at his disposal in dangerous areas, and for me right now he's England's 3rd choice striker, and that's assuming Owen regains fitness and form in time for the World Cup.

Entertaining cameo from SWP on the right, who looked far more dangerous in 25 minutes as a provider than Beckham was all night, Carrick's distribution was excellent throughout, and all-in-all it was a good run-out. Felt sorry for Bent, who ran gamely while he was on there, but too many mistimed runs, and some passes through that didn't make it to him, but he'll definitely still be in Sven's thoughts as he didn't look out of place there.

For the Liverpool lads though, a very good night. At least 3 of our own definitely on the plane for me.  :bowdown

I'm just glad that they've come back in one piece 'n' I can't wait until Sven resigns after the World Cup, we play the most boring football I've ever witnessed. But it's good to see Crouch get on the scorelist that should shut some English yobo's who were booing him a few months ago, good to see Jamie playing well at left back 'n' as for Gerrard when doesn't he play well?

Phenomenal goal from the Uruguayan in the first half, incidentally. One step back, on the back foot from 25 yards out, pretty lazy-looking swing at the ball, but he didn't half catch it. Maybe Robinson's starting position was a bit too much to the other side of the goal, but I don't think anyone would've got there to be honest - awesome strike. :)

I can't understand why it took so long until they started throwing long balls at Crouch. When a coach subs a person like Crouch in the rest of the team is supposed to get the hint and start delivering balls to his head.

Ferdinand was the worst player on the field today.

Rio Ferdinand is one of Sven's favourites, so he'll always be played even if he scored 6 own goals in one match. I've always wanted to see what a Terry & Carra partnership in central defence would be like. And thank god Carrick got played tonight, about time he was given his chances, I'm a big fan of Carrick and I hope he either partners Gerrard or Lampard in central midfield in future games.

This whole Gerrard 'n' Lampard partnership doesn't work, then again they're his favourites so they will always play together in central midfield. :(

Rio's form for Man U hasn't been particularly eye-catching this season, and to be honest if he doesn't get himself sorted for the rest of their fixture list, I can see Sven looking to Carra or Ledley King for his first choice 11.

John Terry's nailed on in England's strongest 11, but I think there's definitely a case for dropping Rio at the moment, and not just based on tonight's performance.

Ivor,

If I were managing England, Rio would of been dropped long ago, I've never understood what anyone saw in him at all, he's just a standard defender, I'll admit he had a very good World Cup 2002 campaign but that's it. Terry, Carra and King would be my three central defenders that I would rotate with maybe Sol Campbell added as well.

But it's Sven's ignorance and stubborness that will lead to another failed campaign.

I'd disagree with that slightly. I think Rio is a class player on his day, but he's had an atrocious season, and tonight he was shocking, particularly first half. Terry is no-nonsense, but is capable of taking a touch if he needs to get himself out of trouble. Carra's a similar sort of player, but maybe a bit more inclined to just clear the danger as opposed to playing himself out of a dangerous situation.

Rio, on the other hand, just tries to be clever too often, and it makes me cringe to see it. Trying elaborate turns against two players 30 yards out from your own goal is absolute suicide, and yet you see him try it time and time again.

If I'd started watching Premiership football this season with no prior knowledge of any of the players, I'd assume Anton was the England international, and Rio was the inexperienced youngster.

He'll go to the World Cup, but I have a horrible feeling he's going to cost us goals. He just doesn't look aware of what's going on around him.

No wonder how they perform or how bad their form is....Lampard, Beckham, Rio & Owen will deffo start for England.

Sven's tend to pick players on their "name" value....

He does indeed pick players by their name value, which is completely wrong. I'd much rather have Shaun Wright-Phillips on the right flank then Beckham, no offense to Beckham but his International career is almost finished, and we should be trying to do what Germany does 'n' mould the youngsters in at an early age. That way they are experienced and that gives you an advantage.

Robinson, Carragher, Terry, King, Young, SWP, Gerrard, Carrick, Downing, Defoe and Rooney. This would be the first eleven I would pick in qualifers and stick without throughout the competition.

Totally agree, but not just on current form.  IMHO Carra's been better than Rio since he moved to central defence.  Why?  The key attribute a defender needs compared to other positions is reliability.  (Hansen's always talking about 'percentages'.)  Carra does the simple things well over and over again.  Defending isn't rocket science, that's why players like Tony Adams are so effective. Okay, Rio looks more elegant coming forward out of defence, but he messes up more than once every time I watch him.  At the highest level mistakes are usually punished and Rio makes a lot more than Carra.  I think people are sometimes deceived by Rio's silky way of moving, but I'd prefer Carra's swagger in my team.
