its not a coincidence that since there have been more cars the rise in cancer has been massive

I can deal with people smoking around me, I would go out otherwise. But why should non-smokers leave a pub when someone lights up? I think they should do it somewhere else, why should I have to put up with someone elses habits, I wouldn't mind if they we're personal habits but they end up involving everyone else.

Also saying cars cause more cancer than smoking maybe true but prove it. The difference is smoking related diseases have and are being proven on a daily basis. I have no faith in the current government but to say they lie about smoking related cancer is ridiculous - border line paranoia.

Rant over sorry had to get it out of the system

agreed.
to be honest i could live with goin outside for a crafty cig but id prefer not to. im just wondering where it will all stop. the amount spent by the hospitals on tobacco related illnesses is actually less than what is spent on tax for the habit so im just wondering what would happen if everyone did give up smoking tomorrow.

brb, going for a fag (cigarette)

the pub is sacred, let's at least keep smoking areas in the boozer. they're MEANT to stink of smoke ffs it's part of their irresistible charm :nod    oh and all barmaids have to have nice boobies & short skirts as well, all ugly ones should be banned

if the political correctness bandwagon carries on like it is, everyone will have to move to greece where i do believe it is COMPULSORY to smoke at all times :buttrock

I'm with you S.C.Shanks...and it's not a case of being a 'do gooder' it's a case of commonsense.

Stu, wanna take a risk?  Try a bungy jump with no rope...it's a risk but the end result would be a rush!!!  :D

I agree that england has a special place for pubs and the culture that goes along with them. But I don't think smoking ban is political correctness, its just society evolving into a modern healthier one. I mean it doesn't take a genius to see the damage that smoking creates. And surely you can think of better things to spend you money on?? I'd actually be gutted if I spent that amount of money on a habit.

Makes you look cool?? Or a fool??  :)

One thing's for certain, you stink & you're clothes stink. Your skin is aging quicker than a non smoker's. Your lungs are clogging up. Your heart is having to work harder.

The good news is that if you quit now, science has shown that your lung and cardiac function recovers quickly (10-20 years). You'll also have more money than you have ever had and you'll wonder how you afforded to use the filthy things.

Just Do It!!!  (hey, good logo for a merchandiser of sports clothing)

Fuckin bollox that mate.

We've all got to die someday.

Its all about political correctness. Don't give pathetic excuses about it being for health reasons. Professional footy players smoke and they're healthy, you probably eat fatty foods, you probably get :censored: at weekends and i don't believe for one second that you stop look listen and think every time you're going to cross a road. No-one is that bloody self concious about the way they live unless they're seriously :censored: up in the head.

Its an absoloute disgrace and the countries attitude should be simple towards these people, if you don't like it FUCK OFF and live somewhere else.

I stopped smoking 9 days ago and I can see both sides of the arguement.

I accept Stu's point that people should be treated like adults and free to make their own decisions. Stu has a point when he says that if non smokers don't like smoky pubs, they shouldn't go, as pubs have always been about drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco and generally letting your hair down.

However, an extension of Stu's point would be that, fair enough, if you want to smoke, you can smoke, you're an adult and you can make your own decisions about how you live your life. However, if you do, and become sick, and need hospital treatment, you should pay 100% of the medical expenses, as your decision to smoke was the reason behind you getting sick.

If I got lung cancer from smoking I have only myself to blame and I don't think society should have to (ahem) cough up for my medical expenses if I need hospital treatment.

Health systems all over the world are clogged up with so many self imposed injuries and illnesses from human weaknesses and indulgences like smoking and liver disease from alcoholism. Why should people who basically ruined their own bodies through self indulgence clog up a system where people who suffer from genetic diseases or are involved in accidents are struggling to get treatment?
